Today's compilation:
Hits House 2001, Vol. 2 2001 House
Alright, well, I don't know how necessarily true this is, folks, but if you look at the back cover of this CD here from France that's packed with a full helping of house gems and jams from the early 2000s, you'll notice that a whole lot of these tracks are marked as being exclusive. And the label that put out this comp, Absolute Sound, which is a sublabel of another French company called Happy Music, *did not* go on to then release most of these 'exclusives' as 12-inches on either their own label or on Happy's. And some of these were pretty popular, well-distributed tunes too!
So either I have a really great comp on my hands here that played a significant role in partially shaping the sound of house music for 2001, by publicly serving up a bunch of tunes for other labels across the globe to then pick up, or maybe that 'exclu' label is being used a bit more gratuitously than it would seem to imply 🤔. Being that none of the songs on this CD are the full-length versions, the specific edits that were supplied on this release could've been what earned them their 'exclu' tags in the first place (which would feel like a little bit of a sleight of hand), or perhaps these songs' inclusions on this CD marked their first ever official appearance in France? 🤷‍♂️
Either way, while the fact that all of these tunes are cut annoyingly short and aren't afforded the necessary breathing room in order for them to achieve their full, delicious impact, it really can't be denied just how chock-full of bangers that this album still is. I think 20 out of 22 of these songs came out in 2001 itself, so let this be an opportunity for you to transport yourself back to that year and allow some of its finest house tracks to just wash over you for over an hour 😌.
Now, it's not very easy to pick a favorite among this batch, but I think Sandy Rivera and LT Brown's "Come Into My Room" might be the one. First of all, it's, of course, a tune that uses the extremely popular filter technique—that approach where certain elements get looped repeatedly, and sound like they're being submerged underwater at first, but then progressively continue to sound clearer and clearer, until they satisfyingly breach the surface. This concept was all the rage in the global underground house space for a long while it seems, and yours truly still happens to be a complete and total sucker for it 😋.
And while its constant implementation can be seen as an unfortunate means to reducing house music down to something that's more formulaic, filtering still has a natural way of generating a level of anticipation for the listener, as they know to await and enjoy the climb-up to that peaking breach, and it also automatically means that, in a genre that's often ridiculed for its overall repetitiveness, that because of the filtering, although the elements themselves will be much the same, they won't actually sound exactly alike with each successive bar, which ends up lending the song a little bit more variety than what was once standard.
So, yeah, I love that track; and not just because of the filtering itself—because there's sooooo many filter tunes out there—but because of what that filtering is applied to: a constantly chirping lead pair of guitar notes and a contrastingly deeper synth piece that accompanies them, which is also further enhanced by some rumbly bass pulsations too.
And another thing that I think's worth mentioning is that Sia—yes, that Sia—is on this release as well. Maybe you're not aware, but long before she went on to become a total 2010s pop sensation who donned her own intriguing face-obscuring wigs in order to retain a semblance of much-desired anonymity, she had actually already been active as a solo musician for well over a decade, and this somewhat popular house remix of her "Drink to Get Drunk," which was done by UK duo Different Gear, is a pretty good one that matches her unique voice to an electro-dubby synth melody.
So, at the end of the day, while every single song on here is most likely better enjoyed in its full-length version, this still makes for a pretty terrific time capsule of house music from 2001. I'm highly skeptical that most of the songs that are labeled as exclusives are actually exclusives though, but if they really are, then damn, is this thing extra special then!

Best Friends Brother
Tumblr media
As your eyes glance around the beautiful garden filled with white chairs either side of the aisle with flower arrangements all the way to the alter. You can’t help but feel utterly enchanted by the scene, it’s stunning. However, you’re in the wrong place right now, Sue specifically asked you to meet her out back to help her get ready but as soon as you turnaround to head there, you bump into Johnny of all people.
To put it simply, Johnny isn’t exactly your favourite person and you’re not his either. Well, that’s a lie. When around others you don’t get along, you don’t hate each other you just don’t really have much to say since he’s always so cocky and you’re his older sisters best friend. But behind closed doors, the sexual chemistry is off the charts and you’ve spent too many nights tangled up in his sheets to count on two hands.
No one knows about your late night rendezvous though, especially Sue. And she can never find out. It would hurt her. You’re her best friend and Johnny is her little brother. So it’s a secret and it will always remain one.
“Wow” his lips curl up into a genuine smile as his eyes take in your figure in the floor length  dark purple bridesmaid dress you have on “you look, great” he says as he tugs on his bottom lip with his teeth, clearly unable to stop those dirty thoughts running wild in his head.
“Just great?” you ask, brow raising slightly before you chuckle and move to walk past him but he grabs your arm just in time to stop you from going anywhere “not just great, but gorgeous. In fact if this wasn’t my sisters wedding then i’d say you were the best looking one here” he turns his head in your direction, his dreamy blue eyes meeting yours, both filled with lust and need. But you can’t do this here. Today is Sue and Reed’s day.
“Johnny” you whisper lazily, the feel of his skin on yours makes you shiver with desire for him to fill you up, kiss you and make you cum around his cock multiple times but that will have to wait. You really need to snap out of this. So you do, you blink and look back up at him before slowly pulling away from “Sue needs me now, i have to go” and just like that he’s behind you, watching as you walk away. Mostly just to watch the way your ass moves in that dress. You can’t say you blame him though, your ass does look good.
The second you step foot indoors you hear Sue moaning about anything and everything to who sounds like Alicia.
“Your saviour is here” you announce and Sue turns around, beaming at you and you can’t help but stare at her. She looks absolutely breathtaking and her dress is the most beautiful you’ve ever seen. She looks just like a princess.  Alicia then leaves to go and check on Ben, leaving you two to it.
“Sue, you look amazing” tears brim in your eyes, drowning out your vision, she spots it immediately, rushing to hand you a tissue “don’t cry, don’t cry, don’t cry. You’ll ruin your makeup”
You take it from her, dabbing underneath your eyes before taking the eyeliner from her to re do what couldn’t be saved in time “i can’t believe you’re finally getting your big day” you finish zipping up her dress before helping her out with her veil.
“Well i’ve waited long enough” she laughs as you finish up and you turn her round so she can look at herself in the mirror.
“Now, i just need to finish my make-up. Help a girl out?”
You don’t even bother to respond, instead you start helping, picking up her bag of products. Her foundation is done so it’s just her eye makeup and lipstick that’s left to do. You go with a nice subtle smokey eye with a little silver glitter on top. Then to finish it off you apply some nude lip gloss to her lips before leaving her to do her own mascara, you would hate to mess it up after all.
“Oh i forgot to check with you, is Johnny outside?”
Even the mention of his name has an obvious effect on your body and it’s something you’ve never been able to control but instead of letting it show, you put your poker face on, clearing your throat and mumbling a quick “yes” and thank god she doesn’t catch on or say anything. You must have hid it well.
“Right, ladies the guests are arriving now and Reed is helping them all to their seats so are you ready?” Johnny pokes his head into the room and Sue nods, letting out a deep breath.
He glances at you before Sue walks over to him to make their way to the other room in which she’s going to be leaving out of to walk down the aisle, leaving you standing there sighing.
Guess it’s time for you to take your own place too. You follow closely behind them and then you and Alicia wait for your queue to go, she goes first, then you. Flowers in hand, smiling around at all of the guests, every one of them dressed up in bright colours, wedding hats galore. And as you take your place next to Alicia at the side of the alter, you watch your best friend walk down the aisle with pride. She means the world to you and if there’s one person who’s the most deserving of happiness, it’s her.
Reed wipes away tears as she stands next to him and you feel your heart melting, more tears forming. Johnny watches you from across the way, wiping your own tears of joy before his focus shifts to the vows.
Sometimes he gets urges to ask you out on a date but as quickly as those urges form, they fade. There’s not a chance in hell of you saying yes to him and he knows it. He’s just a hookup and he’s no stranger to half platonic relationships. He’s never particularly been one for commitment anyway but something about you changes his mind. Since you’ve been Sue’s best friend for god knows how long now, he’s watched many guys come and go in and out of your life. He’s watched and even listened to the many times Sue has held you whilst you cried and to tell the truth, he’s never been able to fathom why anyone would ever want to hurt you. Why anyone would ever cheat or leave you. He always had the biggest crush on you and it’s never left.
Hence why one day he made a move, giving you his best cheesy pick up line at a party Sue threw one weekend. But you ignored him, it was only 2 hours into the party and you weren’t drunk enough to be taking him seriously. However, multiple drinks and shots later, he tried his luck again, and he hit the jackpot. You took him up on his offer. Whilst Sue was in the other room trying to clean up after her guests, you were in Johnny’s room, stripping off in-between heated open mouthed kisses.
It’s pretty obvious where that lead and the next day, you were so mad at yourself for letting it get that far. You cursed alcohol and your stupid brain as you quickly re dressed, repulsed at yourself and your actions. That’s when Johnny shot up, trying his best to make you stay, shutting the door as you tried to open it and standing in the way. You made eye contact with the player and he kissed you. You can’t recall anything else other than feeling captivated by him. His lips moved in sync with yours like they were always made to touch and you couldn’t control the way your body yearned for more.
And the rest is history. Since then you’ve been late night texting and meeting up whenever you could to hook up. Johnny eventually got his own apartment too which only lead to more often than not, the pair of you fucking like rabbits.
It hasn’t just been hookups though, as much as you’d love to lie and pretend that it doesn’t mean a thing, it does. You like Johnny, of course you do. He’s actually the only guy that’s ever been able to make you cum. The only guy who isn’t completely selfish in bed. He makes it all about you, every dam time and you feel torn when it comes to him. A huge part of you knows the two of you feel something deeper and more than just sex. You feel something more intimate. It’s definitely not love but it could be, one day.
Before you know it, you’re ripped from your Johnny themed thoughts as everyone starts cheering and clapping. You join in, watching Reed kiss Sue passionately before the two of them walk back up the aisle. You, Alicia, Johnny and Ben all follow behind with the guests joining in.
The reception is just inside and as soon as you all enter, the music begins. The real old school music. You’re The One That I Want from Grease. The DJ really has a way of luring everyone onto the dance floor right away. Usually at weddings, everyone sits down drinking and chilling before the buffet food comes out but not this wedding.
Sue grabs your hand and the two of you re enact the classic Sandy and Danny scene, overly dramatic though of course and unbeknownst to you, Johnny is watching your every move, unable to stop himself grinning like a cheshire cat. It’s very clear you’re having the time of your life and all he wants is to be able to dance with you.
Once the song is over, you walk around the room to look for the table that you’re going to be sitting at until you hear “over here” and you know that voice anywhere. You turn around to find Johnny sat down, a large glass of wine next to his beer. He ordered for you? Why?
“You’re next to me, hope that’s okay” he stands up, helping you into your chair and tucking it in for you before taking his seat again and sliding the glass of wine to you.
“White wine is still your favourite, right?” nerves fill his voice as he keeps his eyes locked on you “yes, it is. You remembered. Thank you” you waste no time in taking a big gulp of it, you can practically feel yourself getting aroused just by sitting next to the man and to think you’re going to have to deal with it the whole day is torture.
You press your thighs together, trying your hardest to stop whatever is happening in its tracks.
“You not going to dance some more?” he asks, sitting back in his chair, one arm draped round the back of yours “maybe in a minute, i’m still recovering from the first one” you giggle nervously, scared of being seen with him. Sure, you were put with him by Sue herself but what if your farce comes apart now, after all, he is being nice to you and the resting bitch face is missing instead a happy expression has taken its place.
Maybe no one will notice since it’s Sue’s big day, that could be the excuse you use if anyone says anything but then again, why should you care to make excuses? If you enjoy his company that shouldn’t be an issue. Maybe Sue won’t care. She’s always wanted Johnny to settle down with someone nice and you’re nice, right? She’s also wanted you to find someone too. But her best friend and brother getting together probably isn’t what she had in mind.
The song Crazy In Love by Beyonce comes on and Sue practically summons you to the dance floor, so you down the rest of your wine before you rush over to join her. Skipping the regular moves, you and Sue both start dancing like it’s just the two of you. No move off limits as you both grind your hips in circles, shaking your asses and laughing your heads off. She is the only person in this world that can make you laugh like that and you feel incredibly lucky to have her and to be here for her big day.
As your moves get more risqué you catch Johnny adjusting his cock in his dress trousers before drinking more of his beer.
The tension is building within you and you’ve never had to fight temptation so much in the whole year that you two have been doing this. You’re usually very good at waiting and making him wait for it but right now, it’s too hard. The next song that comes on is Check On It by Beyonce, again.
The more of the song that you dance to, you notice the lyrics surprisingly match your situation and a wave of confidence drenches you like rain.
If you got it flaunt it, boy I know you want it While I turn around you watch me check up on it Oh you watchin me shake it, I see it in ya face Ya can't take it, it's blazin’, you watch me in amazement
You continue to show off your best assets, making sure you tease and wind him up more before you make any kind of move which is what you usually do. Any time the two of you fool around, you make him wait and earn it, but it’s one of many reasons why he loves hooking up with you, you’re not easy, you know your worth and you’re 100% worth the wait.
The song finishes leaving yourself and Sue breathless almost. Reed stalks closer, handing his bride a drink and you head over to the bar to get another for yourself before sitting back down again. The buffet will be available soon and you’re desperate for something to eat. Peckish isn’t the word.
“Hello again” Johnny beams and you sip some more wine, a rather big sip yet again before you respond “hello. Are you gonna sit here the whole night?” you question with genuine curiosity, he only really danced a little when the Grease song was on but that’s about it and you aren’t oblivious to the other women checking him out.
“No i intend to dance i just need to be drunk enough for it first”
“I see, maybe then one of those lovely ladies will get a chance to dance with you” you say, observing one in particular who has been staring non stop.
“Please, i’d rather dance with you”
Your heart skips a beat and dare you say it, your vagina develops one. He’s such a sweet talker.
“You looked good out there, y’know” he motions towards the dance floor as if you didn’t already clock on to what he meant and you can’t deny the way your cheeks start to heat up as you thank him shyly.
That’s when he leans closer to your ear, his arm round the back of your chair again as he rasps “and that ass of yours in this dress, baby you got me so hard” his breath fans your neck as he returns to his normal sitting position but he doesn’t miss the way your breath hitches at the dirty comment. He knows all too well the effect he has on you and you know the effect you have on him.
In the past all it’s taken for him is for you to bite your lip and stare him down for him to get hard before. You’re his weakness.
Before you can even go to respond to him though, he clears his throat, tapping away on his phone as he stands up “anyway, if you’ll excuse me, nature calls” he slips his phone back into his pocket, walking away towards the toilets which just so happens to be right behind the DJ.
Your phone buzzes and you check to see a message from him ‘You coming?’ the text reads.
And that alone is enough for you to choke on your own saliva. You quickly sip your drink before standing up yourself and making your way over to the mens toilets. Thank God no one saw you.
“Johnny” you whisper yell until one of the cubicle doors opens, the bigger one at the end. He winks at you as he appears in the doorway and you strut over to him, allowing him to pull you in and lock the door. Your body is flush against his as he starts to kiss your collarbone first. If Johnny is anything it’s a man who loves to savour the moment. He hates quickies and loves to take his time with you.
You’re obviously not the first woman to fall victim to his touch but you’re the only one right now and you’re glad that he’s had experience, it’s clearly made him all the more sensational  in the bedroom.
“Oh” you throw your head back on a quiet moan, hoping not to be too loud despite music blasting outside making it impossible for anyone to hear you.
“Every time you dance, you drive me crazy. Shaking that perfect ass of yours in this dress, making me want you so bad” his lips hover over your sweet spot, his breath fanning it just like it did before.
You wrap your arms loosely round his neck as your back arches and his lips attack your neck like a man possessed, everything about this moment should feel wrong and yet it feels so right. The thought crosses your mind that everyone is out there dancing and most likely eating now all while Johnny is playing with your dress, lifting it up to reveal the new panties that you brought for today. Purple lace to match your dress.
“Oh baby” he groans, tugging on his bottom lip at the sight as his fingers wonder down and slip inside. His cold palm cups your sex making you shiver in surprise before he makes you forget all about it by spinning you around so that you’re pressed against the wall. Caged in by his muscular body as he towers over you.
He presses a chaste kiss to the back of your neck and heat starts to rise to your cheeks, you can’t contain the flustered feeling that fills you. He’s always had a way of being so dominant and stealing all control from you in an instant, since you’re so used to the roles being reversed in your life, he was more than into changing that. And to tell the truth, it’s one of the many reasons that you keep coming back. He pushes you out of your comfort zone in more ways than one.
His fingers play with the flimsy material of your new panties, grazing over your clit multiple times until you’re poking your ass out into his hand. “Someones keen, huh?” his low, raspy and taunting chuckle fills your ear sending shivers up and down your spine and causing goosebumps to form all over your hungry body.
“Please, Johnny” you beg pathetically, once again pushing back against his hand in hopes that he’ll get a move on and touch your properly. Which of course he does. You know he can never resist your charm. All the more reason why he’s slipping your panties to the side now so that his fingers can circle your arousal covered hole, almost dipping into your honey pot but holding back.
“Beg for it” he growls, taking your right earlobe between his teeth and biting down lightly “beg like the good girl i know you are” he continues and you gasp before breathing out a quick plea “p-please touch me Johnny, i need it” as your hands find purchase on the wall.
The feel of his knee spreading your legs apart gets you all the more excited for what’s the come and that’s when he gives you all that you’ve been craving, slipping two thick digits inside of you, coating them in your juices as they hit that spongy spot. He’s never had much trouble when it comes to finding your weak spots, he knows your body inside and out at this point and there’s not a time where you don’t cum when you’re with him.
“That good baby? My fingers getting that little cunt ready for my cock”
Your eyes roll to the back of your head in reaction to the pure filth leaving his not so innocent mouth and just as you go to let out a near enough pornographic style moan, throwing your head back too, the restroom door opens making you stop yourself. Footsteps make their way to one of the cubicles that just so happens to be next to the one your in.
Johnny then takes it upon himself to pull his drenched fingers out of you, reaching his hand in front of your face and shoving them into your mouth for you to suck on, using his free hand to undo his belt and now you know that you’re done for. You know exactly what he’s about to do. His cock rests at your entrance, staying there for a second before he slides in. Your walls welcome him in the best way, wrapping around his cock as he splits you open, stretching you beautifully yet again just like he does every time. The all too familiar feeling consumes you.
“You’d better be quiet if you don’t want to get caught” he mutters in hushed tones, switching it up so that his hand is fully covering your mouth, suffocating you as he drags his cock along your warm velvety walls deliciously. Obviously you don’t want to get caught but right now the anticipation of what could happen is enough to make you clamp down around him, earning a hiss.
A noise that obviously catches the attention of whomever is next door to your cubicle since the unsuspecting gentleman speaks up “are you okay in there, man?” shit. It’s Ben. You feel a wave of shame wash over you as Johnny picks his pace up slowly “yeah, everything's fine” he chirps, as if he has all the time in the world to converse when he’s buried balls deep inside of you.
“If you say so” Ben responds before flushing, washing his hands and then leaving the room. Now it’s just the two of you again. Johnny takes full advantage of the alone time by pushing you right up against the wall, your cheek squished against the tiles, his calloused hands splaying across your ass cheeks now and spreading them apart. Only so he can take a good look at the way he disappears into your tight chanel with ease.
“Doing so well baby, taking this cock like a fucking pro” he grunts, wrapping his hand around your neck and pulling your head back with the help of his other hand grabbing a fistful of your hair at the scalp but keeping your whole body pressed into the wall.
Sinful moans escape your mouth and at this point you’re way past the point of caring or trying to be quiet. Unless someone walks in then you’re going to let go and revel in the feel of him. The way his body traps you in makes your clit pulsate, you love being manhandled and you always have but only by him.
Anyone that takes even so much as a look at Johnny, they think ‘player’ and they’d be right but they’d also think he’d never be the type of man to be as filthy as he is in reality. Not only has he got a foul mouth on him but he’s kinky not to mention skilful in more areas than one. Dick and tongue game on point as well as those magical digits of his and the way they dance across your sex both delicately and brutally all at the same time.
You’re certainly not complaining though.
“Fuck, Johnny” your back arches even more so than it was before as you shakily cry out his name with the kind of want that only he can spur on “what is it baby?”
“Don’t stop, i’m so close” you whimper desperately.
His pace is now rendering on animalistic as he fucks you into the wall with such vigor, wanting nothing more than to feel you come undone all over his cock, something he’ll never grow tired of.
“Come on then baby, give it to me” he eggs you on, keeping one hand wrapped around your neck still, tightening as the seconds tick by whilst his other hand smacks down on your exposed ass cheek, making it wobble a little which earns him a satisfied hum.
The two of you go crazy with you pushing back to meet his thrusts and him spanking your ass, both of you hungry for that release.
All of a sudden though the blaring music coming from outside stops. Making you panic. Johnny on the other hand is so close to reaching his peak and he knows you are too, so he doesn’t bother to stop.
But you hear the faint laughs of the wedding guests before what sounds like the DJ addressing everyone. Fuck. This better not be the speeches. You had one planned and so did Johnny.
He continues to fuck into you, grunting, growling and panting in your ear, driving you closer and closer to that edge. You can feel the coil twisting and turning in your stomach, on the verge of snapping at any second and you don’t think you’ll be able to hold back the noises when it happens.
“Gonna make you cream all over this cock baby and best believe i’ll be filling this sweet cunt up with my cum”
You rest your hand over his around your neck as your whole body starts to shake. You clench around his cock some more and just as you can taste the orgasm, the addition of his fingers pressing down on your clit push you off the edge and your head drops back onto his shoulder. The music starts up again, allowing you to really enjoy this. Your mouth hangs open whilst you scrunch your eyes closed, seeing stars as you fall into a pit of ecstasy. You can feel your legs shaking and threatening to give way but luckily for you Johnny moves his hands to your waist, wrapping around you so he can hold you up whilst he comes close to reaching his own end.
“Fuckkkkk, squeezing me so good baby”
You do it again for good measure and sure enough, he twitches inside of you, his hot cum painting your walls just like he said and a fucked out spent smile forms on your face making him laugh when he sees.
He rides the two of you through your highs before his thrusts come to a halt and he slowly pulls out. He then grabs some tissues, dropping to his knees and pressing yet another chaste kiss to your clit this time before cleaning you up. He can see that you’re struggling to stand so the second he’s done he rises to his feet, pulling you flush against him and then proceeding to push you up against the wall.
The two of you stare deep into each others eyes for a couple seconds, both of your chests rising and falling as you try to normalise your breathing. That was certainly an adventurous, dangerous and thrilling experience, one that you won’t be rushing to partake in again anytime soon. But it was amazing to say the least. The way he’s looking at you right now makes you want to throw caution to the wind and kiss him. So you do. You crash your lips to his, wrapping your arms loosely around his neck and as expected, he kisses back. His grip tightens on your hips, pulling you even closer if that’s even possible.
“What was that for?” he asks as you come up for air and you shrug, not even sure of what it was yourself. But all you know is you like him and this isn’t just some fling to you, some form of messing around until the two of you get bored. There is a genuine connection there, one that you can’t wait to explore some more.
“I don’t even know” you giggle, pecking his lips again.
Silence falls upon the two of you before he finally blurts out “go out with me” as if he’s telling you rather than asking.
“What?” you furrow your brows in confusion.
“Go out with me, on a date”
“I thought Johnny Storm didn’t do dates” you quip back, raising your brows with a smirk to match “i don’t but i’d like to try if it’s with you” and that alone warms your heart. The same heart that’s been crushed and broken so many times before and it’s almost like he’s mending it. Not that you’re complaining.
You take no longer than a second to think before you’re agreeing and kissing him some more. That’s when the music stops and you both look at each other.
He quickly zips up his pants, doing his belt up again and shrugging his jacket back on before turning back to you. With you both now looking decent again, you get him to check your makeup, he wipes the stray bits of mascara that smudged before kissing your forehead.
He lets you leave first whilst he waits an appropriate 2 minutes before he heads out too. No one suspected a thing and now it’s time for the speeches.
This is definitely going to be a wedding to remember...

(The Bad Batch) Wrecker x Reader: Beach
(Author’s Note:  Wrecker and the beach, oh my).
Warnings- Ocean
Endless blue.  That’s what you saw when you stood staring out at the ocean before you.  There was a lapse in the onslaught of waves, a brief calm that allowed you to see the line where the water meets the sky.  It took your breath away knowing that both the sky and water went far beyond that line.
The sun was shining, the air was salty, and gulls sang their songs.  And in addition to all of that, you could hear the laughter of your teammates.  Wrecker had Omega on his shoulders as the two of them waited for the next wave to build up.  Back on shore, the others were sitting in their chairs under the umbrella.
You felt the familiar pull of water back out to sea, which signalled the buildup of another wave, and you planted your feet firmly in the soft sand to keep yourself from being tugged along by the current as you scanned the water for signs of where the wave would begin.  The swell was significant, and you realized that you’d have to swim forward just a little more in order to not be caught in the crash of the wave.  Your first instinct was to check on Wrecker and Omega to make sure they were aware, and to your relief, Wrecker was already carrying her closer to the oncoming wave as it doubled in size.
   “Here it comes!” you called.
   “Hang tight, Omega!”  Wrecker shouted.
A big smile spread across your face as you jumped, gliding over the wave before it began its crash.  It was always a thrill, no matter how many times you did it.  No wave was alike.  Sometimes they were smaller than they looked on the horizon, and other times they were bigger.  You had to be aware at all times and never have your back turned to the ocean.
Once the wave had crashed onto the shore, you and Wrecker exchanged grins.  You absolutely loved how much fun your boyfriend was having.  He hadn’t stopped smiling since the Batch arrived on the beach early in the morning.  As soon as the umbrella was up, he was throwing off his shirt and heading toward the water before even applying sunscreen.
Fortunately, you convinced him to come out long enough to spray him down with it and let it set.  A few flinches and complaints of “that’s cold!” later, Wrecker got the bottle and helped spray you down as well.  You had squeaked at the cold sensation. There was also quite a bit of flirting of course from both of you.
But now, you’d been in the water for the majority of the day already.  After many hours riding or diving through waves, you’d reached your limit.  You swam up to Wrecker.
“I’m going back to the blanket for a while!” you told him.
He stole a glance out at the ocean and back at you.  “Want me to come with you?”
“No, you two keep having fun,” you insisted.
“Alright!”  He and Omega high-fived, and you clambered out of the water onto the sandy beach with a big smile on your face despite your tired limbs.
“Finally had enough, eh?” Echo asked.  He was leaning back in his chair with an arm behind his head and a pair of dark sunglasses covering his eyes.
“Yeah,” you replied, shuddering as you grabbed the towel Hunter offered you and dried yourself off.  “It was perfect today.  The water wasn’t too rough, but there were plenty of waves to keep us busy.”
“If you like that sort of thing,” Crosshair muttered.  He had waded in ankle-deep a few times, but didn’t express much interest in the water other than that.  You wondered if he had an issue with the ocean that his pride wouldn’t allow him to admit.  Still, he didn’t seem to mind the scenery as he napped in his chair out of the sun.
“Those two are still at it,” you said, turning to see Wrecker toss Omega into the water with a hearty laugh.  Her playful shriek was followed by a loud splash.
“Can’t say I’m surprised.”  Hunter let out a low chuckle.  “The water was all they talked about until we got here.”
There was a lull in conversation as you spread your towel out on the sand and laid down to let the sun’s rays warm you.  There was the sound of the cooler opening, and the snap and hiss of a soda can being opened by Crosshair.  The quiet hum from Echo as he accepted Crosshair’s offer of a can for himself.  Tech had actually dozed off in his lounge chair in the middle of fiddling with some device.  It seemed that the last few sleepless nights working on projects finally caught up to him.
You got comfy and relished in the heat that soaked through your skin.  I felt wonderful after being in the cool water for so long.  You could still hear the rush of water crashing onto the sand and the quiet conversations between your teammates under the umbrella.  It wasn’t long until you slipped into a nap.
You woke to the feel of something cold and wet pressed against your side.  It caused you to mumble a complaint at the sensation.  That’s when you felt a shudder beside you.
“Sorry, love,” Wrecker said, voice slightly shaky from chill.  “Just trying to get warm.”
While you were out, it seemed Wrecker had emerged from the water and returned to the blanket.  You peeked an eye open to see him stretched out on a towel right beside yours, droplets of saltwater gleaming on his skin.  You reached up and ran a hand down his forearm, brushing over a few scars.  Wrecker obliged your silent request and lifted his arm so you could scoot over and curl up against his side.
You glanced up to see him gazing at you with the warmest expression before he leaned down to plant a kiss on your lips.  It took some shifting around for Wrecker to settle down, but when he finally did, he was out.  Snores and all.  The ocean could tire anyone out- even someone with as much strength and energy as Wrecker.  Your head rose and fell on his chest with each deep breath he took.  It was peaceful enough for you to fall back asleep.
Omega was telling Hunter all about her adventure in the waves, and he listened with all the interest and enthusiasm of someone who hadn’t seen it all already from where he sat.
“We should start packing up soon,” Tech’s voice said.  He must have woken up and checked the time.
“Give ‘em more time,” Echo replied.  “Besides, it’s not like we really have anywhere to be.”
And that was the last thing you heard before you fell asleep again- this time, in your love’s arms.

Leaves crunched under her boots the further out she got. The cool air sending shivers up her spine despite the heavy jacket she wore. The faster her steps fit, the harder the leaves rustled against her feet.
Today had been a long day, having been out since before the sun breaked over the sky. She had left at 5:30 to head into the city, going to various shops with Tim. They were hurrying to gather everything they needed for Saturday.
In 2 days time, was the Wayne Halloween gala. Bruce would always host one each year, but with the help, and threats, sandy convinced him to let her decorate.
Usually, there wasn’t much. A punch bowl filled with dark red punch, people wearing black, and the ovation all scary song. But not this year.
Halloween has always been one of her favorite holidays. While her parents didn’t let her leave the house, they would decorate their home with spooky decor, bake Halloween treats for them to enjoy and dress up and have a dance party.
Since her adoption, she kept up the tradition. Last year having baked cookies whilst dressed up with her father. Her dresses up as Dorothy, and Jason as the cowardly lion. It suited him, for his large stature, and as she put it, “nearly as much body hair.” Which caused him to laugh. Halloween has a special place in her heart, it wasn’t just scary costumes and scares. It was about having fun being someone that you aren’t. Well, some did that everyday.
She kept walking outback, further out than she had ever been. Usually she stuck to the large garden, but today she went further.
She stopped in her tracks when she noticed a pond, and beside it was, a small barn? Questions swam in her brain as to what it could be. It didn’t look old, or vacant. Her curiosity got the better of her as she walked up to it.
Reaching for the handle, she braced herself. What could be in here? Is she allowed? She’s far from the manor, barely seeing it from this distance.
A noise from inside startled her, her heart sinking slightly. Somethings in there. She finally turned the knob, a gasp leaving her when she opened the door.
Tims phone rang beside him, startling him awake. Drool collected at the side of his face, wiping it away. He picked it up, answering the call without looking. “Hello?” He asked, his voice strained and groggy with sleep. “Tim, I, um. How do I put this? Help.” His heart picked up as he’s fully awake, panic fills him when he hears the tone in Sandy’s voice. Slightly wavering but calm. “What’s going on, where are you? Are you hurt?” Each question he asked came out more urgent than the last. “First off stop panicking. Second, I um, went for a walk outback and I came across a small barn. And I’m. Idk how to put this so I’m just gonna say it. There’s a cow and it’s currently sucking my hand like it’s a nipple. I’m stuck.” Relief filled him, then questions, then laughter. “So you’ve met batcow.” He chucked. “Huh? I’m, what?” Her response made him laugh even harder. “Damian got her when he was younger. She’s actually the reason he went vegetarian. Why don’t you just pull your hand out her mouth? She’s not mean.” “That’s the problem. Each time I try she cries. I don’t want to offend her.” Laughs boomer out his chest, his head thrown back as he clutched his stomach. “So she’s doing that again, alright. I hate to say this but, I’ve gotta call Damian to go get you. Sometimes she does this and he’s the only person she listens too. Are you okay with that?” “It’s fine, just tell him to hurry up. It’s cold out here.”
Damian sighed when he spotted her, confusion coming even faster when he got up to her. She sat against the barn, with batcow still sucking her hand. He watched as she talked to the cow as if it was a normal person. “So you’re talking to animals now?” He asked, a small smirk on his face. “You’re one to talk.” He raised his eyebrow at her. “You dress up every night, inspired by a bird. That’s totally normal.” Both chuckle slightly at her response. He bends down to both of them, bringing his hand and scratching the top of the cows head. “Alright come on pretty girl. You gotta let go of her hand.” As if he used magic, the cow let go of her hand. She shakes her hand, wiping it off on her pants. They both stand up, putting the cow back inside the barn.
She ran ramped down the hallway, dispersing and running back down for what was the 36 time. Dick and Damian both opened their doors, stepping out. She ran into dicks chest, nearly knocking both of them over. She had a box in her arms, handing it to dick. “There’s more in my room. Both of you, bring it down to the gala room now.” She frantically exclaimed. Running back to her room, running out with 2 more boxes.
Shock filled them when they entered the room. The usually plain grand room filled with decorations. Cobwebs strung on each wall corner. Toy bats hung down from the feeling. Pumpkins filled each window and empty surface along with candles that hadn’t been lit. “How did you-“ “lots of dedication, and a ladder. Now both of you, get everyone to come in here and help me.” Shock filled them further. She looked tired. Her usually wavy hair now curly and wet. She wore high waisted jeans with a tank top tucked into it. Her botfly glistened with a layer of sweat. Her face was flushed, shiny due to her sweating. Both of them looked around again, still in awe of the room. “You’ve done all this, by yourself?” Damian asked. “Yes, I started around 2 this morning.” She replied. Her voice sounding even more tired than before as she rummaged through another box. “Wait, 2? I heard you go to bed at 12. Have you slept?” Duck asked, worry filling him as he watched her. “Couldn’t fall asleep. I gave up at around 1:30 and started getting everything ready for tomorrow.” Worry stuck both of them at her response. “Sandy, go to bed. You need to sleep.” Dick says, his voice harder than usual. “It’s fine. I need to get this done. Besides, Tim does it all the time.” She replies, annoyance laced in her voice. “Yes and he's done this for years. You haven’t. So go to bed.” Damian said, his voice growing slightly irritated. She set the candles down on the floor, looking at him. Her eyes bore holes into him. “Damian, shut the fuck up. You’re the last person who should be talking about my wellbeing. So stay the fuck out of this.” She exclaimed. Anger evident in her voice. Rage and anger filled him at her voice, his arms slightly shaking at his sides. “And I don’t need you to fucking drop and fall because you didn’t sleep last night.” He replied, anger in his voice. “Oh so now you care. You’ve never once gave a damn if I was okay or hurt. So you know what Damian? Go fuck yourself. I tried fixing us, I tried being nice. But you have your panties in a twist. Screw you.” She yelled, tears in her eyes nearing falling. She walked away, her footsteps hard and fast as she left the room. His heart throbbing in his chest in pain.
The commotion could be heard from floors away, everyone who could make it was there for the annual Wayne Halloween gala. But while usually the room was how it usually looked, now decorated from floor to ceiling. The staircases were lined with white taper candles that stretched . Tables covered by black and red table cloths with the same candles in the center. Walls covered with old paintings, some of which were family, others horror. Pumpkins filled the corners of the room. Small fake bats and spiders lined the ceiling along with cobwebs.
She smoothed out her dress for the tenth time in the last few minutes. She added a final hair pin to her hair, smoothing the long tendrils out of her face. She wore a long black wig, styled in a curled updo with a dark rose. The front layers lay curled at the sides of her face. It was strange, seeing the way she dressed for the night. She looked as if she came from early Victorian times. The long black lace dress she wore was beautiful. The intricate lace that covered the entirety was astonishing. The only color to the dress was the dark red corset that showed through the chest piece. Very little make was applied, alert from fake blood that dropped from her mouth down her neck. The fangs she wore in her mouth weren’t as uncomfortable as she thought, having gotten more realistic smaller ones rather than the large ones you’d find at a Halloween shop. And with one final look, she stepped out of her room.
All eyes watched as Damian walked in, the room going slightly quiet. He wore a long dark black coat, along with a dark red vest underneath with gold details. A puffy white button up underneath that only showed in the chest. Black dress pants with shiny black shoes completing the store. His hair covered by a shoulder length black wig, messily tied back by a ribbon. His usual dark emerald green eyes now dark yellow. The only giveaway as to his costume was the fangs in his mouth.
His breath caught in his throat, heart thumping loudly in his chest when he saw her. She looked nothing like herself. Her usual short hair now long in an intricate updo. What would usually be her usual sweater with capris, now a long bold Victorian ball gown. His eyes follow her as she glides around the room.
She watched as countless people cane up to her, her heart beating wildly in her chest. Her stomach tied in knots as they all greeted her. She swallowed the vomit that she was sure would come up and put on a smile. She shook more peoples hands in 10 minutes than she ever had in her life. Her chest closing up the longer she was around them.
This wasn’t her thing. All the people, the dresses, the fear of someone taking photos, everything was growing too much. Tears collected in her eyes that she blinked away. Her throat burning as her heart sped up further.
She let out a gasp when a hand was placed on her shoulder. Her heart sank further. That is until she turned around, a large smile grew on her face. “Tim!” She exclaimed, throwing her arms around him. His breath being knocked out by the force of her hug. He let out a laugh as she latched into him, wrapping his arms around her. “Hey, everything alright?” He chuckled. “No” she mumbled into his chest. He let go of her, looking down at her. His face concerned. “What’s going on?” He asks, his hands on her shoulders. “How do you do all of, this?” She asks, gesturing around the room. “God I feel like I’m gonna puke.” She says, swallowing the lump in her throat again. “Here’s the thing, you don’t. None of us like this, not even Bruce or dick. What you do is you put on a happy smile, shake peoples hands, and barely answer questions. But hey, now you’ve got me with you.” He chuckles, watching as her shoulders relax. “Now come on, I’ve got a few people you should meet.”
“Sandy, this is-“ “commissioner Gordon.” Both men looked at her shockingly. “He was one of the first on the scene the night my parents died.”
Tears streamed down her face like a waterfall that couldn’t stop. The pain in her back was nothing compared to the shocking pain in her heart. It felt like white hot searing pain that wouldn’t leave as she stared at her parents. “M-mom? Dad? Please.” She sobbed. The screams of both of them ringed in her ears as her heart screamed out. She couldn’t move from the floor, the blood now cold against her front as she begged for death. “God, please.” She begged, slipping into what was hopefully death as she welcomed it.
Bright lights blinded her eyes, her coming to and hearing people all around her. Her heart beating out of her chest as she moaned out in pain. Trying to alert anyone that she was alive. “We've got a survivor!” Someone yelled. They sounded so far from her, as if she was underwater and was hearing the yell from above her. A gasp was heard before she opened her eyes, seeing an angel crouching down to her. His hair was a light red, along with his Mustache. He wore thick framed glasses that hid his light blue eyes. “Hey I need you to stay with us, everything is gonna be alright.” She heard the man say, before she fell unconscious again.
Both men look at her again, mouths open in shock, neither one knowing what to say. “How did you remember?” Tim asks. “Because that night I thought he was an angel. You gotta remember, I wasn’t allowed around people. The first person I saw besides my parents was, him. My mom and dad always taught me that before you go to heaven, you are visited by an angel.” She said, the corner of her eye shining momentarily. She watched as Jim’s eyes glossed over before he blinked it away. “You know, I always wondered what happened to you after that night. And when I saw your face in the newspaper, it took me a bit to recognize you. And when Barbara confirmed it, it made me tear up a little.” He said. Tears gathered in her eyes. A smile formed on her face before standing on her toes and hugging him. He froze momentarily before wrapping his arms around her. Tears fell down her cheeks onto his coat. Tears collected in his eyes as he rubbed her back. “It’s so good to see you doing so well. It’s cases like yours that keep me going.”
She walked over to the table with drinks, spotting a man standing there already. He wore a long black jacket with gold embellished. It was tight to his body. Showing his broad shoulders and muscular build. His hair was long and black, pulled back by a ribbon. She took in a deep breath as her stomach shook slightly. She walked over to the table, taking in a final breath before getting beside him. She looked up at him, her heart sinking into her stomach.
He heard someone walking behind him, hearing their large intake of breath before they got beside him. He heard her breath caught in her throat. Looking over at her, his heart reasoned with pain and shock.
“Wh-what are you wearing?” He asks, his tone sharp. “I should be asking you the same thing.” She bit back. Anger evident in her voice. He looked away from her, taking in a deep breath. “You gotta be kidding me.” He whispers. Anger rises in her as she folds her arms together. “What’s that supposed to mean.” She asks. Boring holes into his face. “We’re at a Halloween gala, wearing the same theme. Do you have any idea how much the press are going to write about this? They’ll have a field day with this.” He bites back. Anger in his voice as his body tenses up. “Oh I’m so sorry I couldn’t read your fucking mind. But yeah suure let’s blame me like you always do. Because Damian Wayne is never in the wrong and it’s always me.” She says, pain shooting through her heart. “Oh you’re one to talk. It always starts with you. You just bring it out in me.” He retorts. “Oh yeah like it was my fault you threw that Batarang into my shoulder.” She says, tears collecting in her eyes. He balls his fists tightly, jaw set as he bore his eyes into hers. “It was an accident!” He exclaimed. Voice slightly louder. “Just like you.” She says. She walks away from him, heart throbbing in pain.
Tears collected in her eyes as she sat in a chair, watching everyone dancing. Her heart still panging against her chest as she dabbed her eyes with a napkin.
She felt a warm hand on her shoulder, turning around and letting out a chuckle. Behind her was dick, but it was hard to tell with what he wore. His usually dark hair was covered with a blond wig. He wore a whit shirt with a blue collar poking out. Blue pants and an orange scarf. He rolled his eyes playfully, a smile on his face. “Yeah yeah yeah let it out. This was babs idea.” He chuckled. He got up and sat in the chair beside her, turning it to face her. “Now what’s going on?” He asks, her breath getting caught in her throat. She took in a deep breath. “Damian was just being an ass earlier. All because we happened to be dressed as vampires.” Dicks face slightly falls and turns annoyed as he looks away. Closing his eyes and letting out a sigh. “I’m sorry sands.” He says, eyes caster down. She puts her hand against his shoulder. “It’s fine dick. You can’t control how he is. It just sucks how it puts me in a horrible mood every time.” She says, eyes looking down to her lap. “Well then come on, I know a way to cheer you up.” He says, grabbing her hand and pulling her up.
Both of them walk onto the dance floor to Barbara, who’s talking to her dad and laughing about something. She turns and her eyes light up when she sees dick. Causing him to smile and put his arms around her waist. Kissing her lightly before she lets go from him, both smiling. She turns and sees sandy behind him, breaking from his arms and pulling her into a hug. “Hey sweetie. You look amazing. Now come on, let’s have some fun!” Barbara says, a bright smile on her face.
She can’t help the laugh that bubbles out of her as she seats side to side. Her arms around Barbara’s shoulders and they both sway fast to the music. They twirl in a circle, causing her dress to glide along the floor in a large circle. The song comes to a close as they both laugh. “Okay time to switch!” Barbara laughs, letting go of her and spinning her around. She nearly falls into dicks chest, causing both to let out large laughs. Another song starts playing, a gasp leaving dick as a wide smile takes over his face. She recognizes it as bob seger, her dad playing him when they go out driving together. She laughs as dick stars moving his hits side to side as he raises one arm in the air. “Just take those old records off the shelf!” He sings out loud, causing her to throw her head back and laugh as both dance to the beat. She can’t stop as tears stream down her face as she dances with him, her head thrown back in laughter.
He watches as her head throws back as laughter erupts from her. His heart throbbing in pain that causes him to look away. It hurts, he remembers the times he could get her to laugh just the same way. Tears falling down her face as she clutched her stomach. Sometimes getting her to laugh so hard she would snort. A tear fell down his cheek as he looked down. He couldn’t stop hearing her laughs, even with everyone else in the room. It was as if, it was just her. That’s all that played in his mind.
His feet dragged as he walked down the hallway, his eyes slowly closing the further he got to his room. All the energy he usually had, was drained from him.
His head spin slightly the further he walked, nearly falling due to his Exhaustion. Every bit of him fighting and straining to continue. But relief filled him when his hand grabbed onto the knob.
He opened the door, a smile on his tired face formed when he stepped into the warm room. He took his jacket and shirt off and dropped it to the floor. Not even bothering with his pants. Not noticing the carpet on the floor, or the smell of vanilla in the room. Not even noticing the dress that laid on the floor by his feet. Too tired to notice the completely different bed when he crashed down onto it. Smiling as he snuggled into the silk bedding, the smell almost familiar. But his exhaustion was too high to think about it as sleep overcame him.
A scream startled him awake, his heart nearly falling out from how fast it was going. Jumping as the scream didn’t stop. Only opening his eyes in sheer panic.
“WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING!” She screamed out. Panic filling him as his vision cleared. His heart going ramped when he saw her. Her hair was wet and falling in her face. Small droplets of water cascading down her body. She stood in her doorway of her bathroom that was right in front of her bed. She was bare as the day she was born, no towel or clothing to cover her. She crouched slightly, her legs and arms doing a poor job to shield her body from him. What was once exhaustion that filled him, was now adrenaline pumping through him. His body feeling like a fire burned inside him.
Panic surged through him as he abruptly got up from the bed, eyes still wide at her. “WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY ROOM!” She screamed. “I-Im sorry, I thought this was my room.” He stuttered out. Panic still high in him along with the burning growing stronger. His breathing raged and fast. “GET OUT!” She screamed, him running out as fast as he could.
He slammed his door shut, his breathing ramped and fast. His heart beating wildly, nearly painful. He fell onto his bed, his body still feeling that burning grow. He was conflicted, he wanted to run away as soon as he saw her. But he was frozen in place. A strong urge to grab onto her, to feel her wet skin on his as his body surged with electricity and want. A feeling deep inside him craving even now to go back, to feel her skin beneath his. To feel her warmth and touch on him. Memories flooding him of that night. The feel of her skin in his hands as he gripped onto her. The paralyzing feeling of her wet lips on his neck. Her warm tongue pressing against his pulsepoint that sent shocks through his body. Energy surged through him in a way that he hasn’t felt since. It was adrenaline or fear. It was akin to his body burning from the inside as his nerves felt sensitive against the sheets. His heart still ramped.
His Breathing slowed down, feeling existed after some minutes. His heart slowing back down as his eyes grew heavy. The feeling inside him growing down the further he grew tired. Finally relaxing as his eyes shut, sleep taking him under once again.
(Warning, heavy petting)
Walking into his room, he noticed the lights were off. The only source of light coming from the windows. Panic slighting growing when he noticed that they we’re open, the curtains blowing in the wind slightly. But what truly shocked him, was the silhouette of a person on the other side of the bed. He watched as they moved around the bed to the foot of it. Their steps light against the floor. It was a woman, panic being replaced with desire as her body came into view. Her face was hidden, the lights from the windows only showing what she wore, well, lack thereof. Dark green lace barely covering her glowing skin. He watched as she walked closer to him, his body burning with energy and want pulling him to her. But he stood froze, watching as she grew closer to him. The lingerie she wore standing out more the closer she got to him. The baralet she wore was see through. Her nipples hard against the thin fabric. He watched as she stood no more than 2 feet from him. A gasp leaving him when he sees her face. Her lips painted red as her hair was curled slightly. Her usually sapphire eyes a dark midnight blue. “What are you-“ he questioned, before she put her finger to his lips. “Shh, it’s okay.” She whispers, before flushing herself against him, pulling his face to hers, their lips crashing together.
A large gasp leaves him as he jolts awake. His breathing ragged as he opens his eyes and sits up. His heart beating wildly against his chest as he shakes. That feeling inside him worse than before as the images played in his head. A groan leaving him as he shuts his eyes, trying anything to fight the sight of her body against his. His body shaking worse as he grips the blanket underneath him. That burning feeling back and worse the longer he sits there.
His cock throbbed inside his pants, the feeling almost painful.
He abruptly got up from his bed, walking into his bathroom. Tuning the light on as he walked over to the shower, turning it on. He stripped from his pants and underwear and got in. A gasp leaving him as the cold water hit his back. Causing his breathing to grow heavy as his body tensed at the freezing temperature. His body no longer feeling hot as he shivered in the stream. Hand against the wall as he lowered his head, heart still ramped as when he woke, the images still playing in his mind.

Something Good, Part Eleven
Things I don’t know about include medicine and plants. Thanks Google.
Sorry to Lan Qiren’s reputation I guess I need him to be a dick.
Part One, Part Two, Part Three, Part Four, Part Five, Part Six, Part Seven, Part Eight, Part Nine, Part Ten
---
After morning lessons, the children are taken to the infirmary. They file in, a little row kneeling and a row standing in a half-circle around the bench where Wen Qing stands, holding onto a mortar and pestle like her life depends on it. From his position in the corner, Wei Wuxian gives her a bright encouraging smile. Lan Wangji sweeps in and joins Wen Qing at the front, giving the children his typical not-smile—it strikes Wei Wuxian suddenly that this particular warmth in his face, a loosening of tension around his eyes, maybe, his mouth still neutral but not so set, is something that only comes out around the children. Lan Wangji, he’s starting to realize, exists in the space between things. Not warm, not really, but not entirely cold either.
Wei Wuxian’s good mood is slightly spoiled by the arrival of Lan Qiren. After acknowledging the respectful bows of greeting he remains in the doorway and gestures to Wen Qing.
“Disciples,” Lan Wangi says, standing up a bit straighter, if that’s possible. “Lady Wen is a very accomplished doctor, and she is going to give you all a lesson today. Let us thank her.”
“Thank you, Lady Wen,” the children chorus.
Wen Qing inclines her head. “Today I am going to show you a simple dressing, which helps to heal a cut or scrape. The first thing we do is to clean the wound with fresh water.”
She’s clearly uncomfortable with all of the attention focused on her, but she patiently talks the children through chopping herbs and measuring out oils, which type of cloth is best for binding. She lets them each come up to smell the ingredients separately and the concoction together, looking a bit thrown at their starry-eyed adoration with every question. The children are very well behaved—Wei Wuxian only has to tap the Trio of Terror on the shoulder a few times and raise his eyebrows before they stop fidgeting.
“Now I can show you how to apply the dressing,” Wen Qing says. She turns to Lan Wangji and blushes, looking between him and Lan Qiren awkwardly.
“Here, Lady Wen!” Wei Wuxian pipes up. “I volunteer to be your patient!”
He winds his way around the kids and squeezes in between her and Lan Wangji, rolling up his sleeve. Wen Qing picks up a small knife and the smaller children gasp.
“Wei-qianbei!” Lan Sizhui cries out, covering his eyes.
“Don’t worry, friends! Lady Wen is a very talented doctor and will fix me right up.”
Wen Qing sets the knife against his forearm, but before she can break the skin another hand closes gently around Wei Wuxian’s wrist, pulling him away.
“That is not necessary,” Lan Wangji rumbles, fingers warm and firm and circling Wei Wuxian’s forearm completely.
“It’s alright, Lan Wangji,” he says quietly. “Lady Wen has healed worse than a little cut.”
“It is not necessary,” he says again. He keeps a hold of Wei Wuxian’s arm and picks up a brush, dipping it lightly in ink and drawing a thin line across his skin. “There. That will do.”
“I don’t think—”
“A-Yuan is frightened,” Lan Wangji says quietly, not looking up from the drying ink for a long moment.
When his wits have regathered, Wei Wuxian pulls gently out of his grasp and turns a smile on the children. Lan Qiren is glowering from the doorway.
“We can imagine that this is a little cut. Nothing to worry about! Lady Wen, will you show us how to apply the dressing?”
It’s a bit silly; Wen Qing dabs around the ink with a cloth and ties the fragrant bundle around his arm.
“It feels better already!” he says, striking a strong pose to make the children laugh.
“Yes,” Wen Qing says, fussing with her ingredients. “So that’s how the medicine works. You can add other ingredients as well, if there is swelling or infection.”
The children look at her. She looks at Lan Qiren. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji look at each other.
“Thank you, Lady Wen,” Lan Wangji says, bowing graciously to her. The children mimic him.
Lan Qiren stays in the doorway, watching.
“Hanguang Jun!” Ouyan Zizhen calls out suddenly. “When are you and Lady Wen getting married?”
Little romantic.
“Very soon,” Lan Qiren says from the doorway.
The children buzz with excitement until Lan Qiren clears his throat, frightening them all back to attention. Wei Wuxian stands between the couple, very carefully looking at no one.
Unable to stand another second of silence, Wei Wuxian cries out, “Disciples! Should we show Lady Wen what we learned in the garden?”
There’s a great cheer, and when Lan Wangji gives a nod the children file out of the infirmary.
“Everyone check on your favorite plants and make sure there are no weeds!” Wei Wuxian calls after them.
“Here, let me take this off,” Wen Qing says, reaching for the dressing, but Wei Wuxian pulls back.
“Oh no!” he pouts. “This was a gift from the great Lady Wen. Lan Wangji, don’t let her take it away from me. After all, I may need it one day!”
Wen Qing rolls her eyes and starts out of the room, only to be stopped by Lan Qiren. Wei Wuxian tries to overhear, but Lan Wangji catches his arm again, gently. He reaches out and rubs his thumb over the smear of ink that peeks out from beneath the cloth.
“It would have been fine, Lan Wangji,” Wei Wuxian says softly. “I’ve had worse than a little cut from a friend.”
“I know.”
There’s nothing else to say, and in the silence Wen Qing’s voice carries through the room.
“—I don’t understand, Teacher.”
“Don’t worry, it will become easier as they get to know you. They respect you, and that is what matters. Between you and Lan Wangji, the junior disciples will have everything they need.”
“Uncle,” Lan Wangji says, moving away from Wei Wuxian. “I don’t understand your meaning.”
Lan Qiren waves a dismissive hand. “Certainly you do. After the wedding, when Lady Wen moves to Cloud Recesses permanently, she will take over caring for the children.”
Wei Wuxian digs his thumbnail into the wood of the table.
“Uncle,” Lan Wangji says again, stubbornly polite, “Lady Wen is an accomplished doctor. Surely her talents are more suited for the infirmary. There is no reason Wei Wuxian should not stay as caretaker.”
It looks very wrong for Lan Qiren’s glare to focus on Lan Wangji. Wei Wuxian almost wants to dive between them, as if he could take the force of it like a lightning bolt to the chest.
“Wangji, we will be in a stronger negotiating position after the marriage. The Gusu Lan Sect has borne this shame long enough.”
He doesn’t wait for a reply. Wei Wuxian might almost think he’s been forgotten, but Lan Qiren casts him a brief disdainful glance on his way out the door. He digs his nail deeper into the table, then yanks his hand back as a splinter starts to draw blood.
“Come on, Master and Lady,” he says, aiming for cheerful. “The kids are excited.”
They reach the garden just as Lan Yixian hits Su Meiling in the back of the head with a clump of dirt. Before she can start yelping about it, Wei Wuxian rushes over to brush off her hair, waving the others around him with one hand.
“Here, here, come on. Let’s show Lady Wen and Hanguang Jun what we learned about the garden. Do you remember?”
“Yes, Wei-qianbei!” they crow.
I’m going to miss that, he thinks.
He lines them up in a scraggly, muddy row, silently wishing he could change them into their play clothes, and says, “You know the song, so sing when I direct you! Licorice first!”
He taps Wen Ning on the shoulder and sings quietly along with him.
“In a sandy bed in bright light Here is licorice, growing strong!”
Wei Wuxian taps Yao Hauling on the head, and she sings, “Soothes your stomach with one small bite!”
“Everybody!”
“Sun and rain we sing our song!”
Wei Wuxian spins along behind them, tapping heads between each line.
“In the shade with lots of water—”
“Here is ginseng, growing strong!”
“Helps revive a sleepy daughter.”
“Sun and rain we sing our song!”
“Winding up the poles in sunshine—”
“Lei gong teng is growing strong!”
“Fixes swelling—clever green vine!”
“Sun and rain we sing our song!”
“Here in shadow, where it’s soggy—”
“Pink rhodora growing strong!”
“Take when mountains make you groggy.”
“Sun and rain we sing our song!”
“Excellent, excellent!” Wei Wuxian shouts, tousling hair and pinching cheeks. Lan Wangji and Wen Qing clap, and Wen Qing leans over to give her brother a squeeze.
“I knew they couldn’t take your music away,” she murmurs to him, smiling over Wen Ning’s shoulder.
“I don’t get in trouble if someone else sings it,” he replies, tapping his nose.
“I am very impressed by your memorization,” Lan Wangji says. Lan Sizhui looks like he’s about to lift off the ground with pride. “And the medicine garden is very well-tended. You have all been very attentive to the plants and also to the rabbits on the back hill. The Lan sect and I thank you for your dedication.” He bows very formally, and the children bow in return, struggling to keep their grins under control.
“Now, my clever, muddy rascals,” Wei Wuxian says, “off to lunch! Go on, wash the dirt off your hands. It may be medicinal, but it tastes bad on rice. Go, go!”
“Dirt is not medicinal,” Wen Qing says as they run ahead of him.
“It’s a medicine garden, Wen Qing.” He winks at her. “Walk! Don’t run! Walk! Come on—”
“Wei Wuxian,” Lan Wangji says. “A word.”
It’s not a question, but it’s not a command either. Somewhere in between.
Wen Qing nods to them both and hurries off after the children.
“She’ll get the hang of it,” Wei Wuxian says. Stop. Shut up. “They’ll love her. So will you, of course. If you don’t already.” Shut. Up.
“Wei Wuxian,” Lan Wangji frowns, “about what Lan Qiren said.”
“Don’t worry about it. Never mind! Naturally, nothing lasts forever. Naturally!”
“Wei Wuxian—”
“Although I do agree with you, Wen Qing is wasted outside the infirmary. Not wasted, obviously! What do I know? Lan Qiren is so old fashioned. But! Above my pay grade, clearly. Actually, I don’t get paid—”
“Wei Wuxian—”
“Wei Ying. Please.” He swallows and looks down at his hands, picking at his bandage. “Once. Once more.”
“Wei Ying.”
He hates how it thrills him.
“You work hard. What you do—I can’t do what you do.”
“You sell yourself short, Second Master Lan.”
“Lan Zhan.” Wei Wuxian’s eyes snap up to meet his. He looks very much like he wants to break eye contact, but he doesn’t.
“Aiyah,” Wei Wuxian breathes.
“Only when the children aren’t around.”
“Obviously.”
Lan Wangji nods, turns, hesitates, and leaves.
“Aiyah.” Somehow, haltingly, Wei Wuxian smiles.

The knock at your door interrupts your hand as you apply a muted lipstick. In the office, you’re a lip balm kind of woman but going to the bank today is an outing you put in a little more effort for. Your skirt and blouse are your normal work attire but there’s extra makeup, hair falling over your shoulders instead of wrapped up on your head, and your heels are half an inch higher. This is not new behavior. Going anywhere on company business always gets this kind of effort, in the same way that you’d dress up if you were going out for the evening. The result gets you a little more kindness in the world outside of your office walls.
The effort has absolutely nothing to do with the man on the other side of your front door.
“Y/N? You in there?” The knock comes again while you’re dabbing at the smudge from his first interruption.
“Yes! One second.”
Dean had insisted on coming with you, the trip is completely routine you’re glad to have him. You’re not paranoid, it’s not like the shifter has magic powers to know what you’re going to do, it can’t pop out of the woodwork at the bank to get you. You’re ninety-nine percent sure anyway. It will still be nice to have backup as if you’re doing something important. Even if you’re not, even if you’re doing your job and nothing more.
Dean has returned to his car when you step outside, he’s propped against it and from where he is he looks you up and down while you lock up.
“Well, don’t you look nice for a visit to the bank?” He asks once you’re approaching him.
It’s pointless to try and hide the blush but you look down at the ground anyway, in an attempt to. "I'm going on behalf of work, so, you know?"
He pushes himself up from the Impala and winks, “you sure you haven’t got a will they won’t they thing with some nerdy teller?”
“Why does he have to be nerdy?” you play mock offended.
“Because I bet all the nerds like you.”
You purse your lips. “Whatever, nerd.”
Y/N had worried about many things since opening her eyes that morning. Where was her lost shoe? Why didn't she have milk in the fridge? How long would it take to find the shifter? All of these paled in comparison to the concern she had over how easy things had become with Dean. This man—impossible as he and his brother were—was supposed to be, well, an inconvenience. Or she was supposed to be his inconvenience. Her blood   should boil when she spoke to him and at best they were supposed to work together begrudgingly. Perhaps with Sam wedged between them to referee.
That's how it had started and that's how she had expected their relationship to stay. In that reluctant space between enemies and acquaintances. Yet she slipped into the front seat of his car, a figurative piece of him, and sunk into the soft leather. It wasn’t her first time inside his Baby and that was only further proof that things had become too good. Much better than they should have been. She was comfortable.
Comfortable was not a safe place to be with Dean Winchester. Comfortable led to preposterous behavior like flirting, and flirting begets terrible decisions. For Y/N those end results were, admittedly, looking better and better with each passing minute.
You hate her sometimes. Maybe all the time. She’s trying to kill you after all.
If you weren’t so afraid of 'it' then your biggest worry wouldn’t be flirting with Dean. It would be the death hanging over your head. Unfortunately, it’s all too easy to put that in the back of your mind. Most people don’t think about death on a daily basis, that’s kind of the human condition. Knowing that it’s coming but ignoring it till the bitter end. So, Dean, the shifter, what shade of lipstick you’re going to wear—you make them all so much more urgent than they are.
The writer helps with finding distractions in things. You’re still allowed to hate her. You can hate that she knows you so well and that you don’t know if it’s because she created you, or you’re just unlucky. You can hate that she still hasn‘t told you how you’re going to die.
You’re also pretty sure that you hate her for the slow descent into liking Dean. It’s bad enough in your head. In the story online, it’s an actual love affair. And you still don’t know if it’s you or her that made the choice about him. Does she write it because you feel it, or do you feel it because you hear her? Or both?
“You're quiet over there.”
You’re looking out of the window, seeing the world through Winchester eyes. “Sorry," you grin to yourself, "didn’t realize you were a chatty Kathy while you're on a case.”
He chuckles, “didn’t realize you weren’t.”
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw it. Dean glancing in her direction. Glance might be too much of a word for the half a second he takes his eyes off of the road. It would hardly warrant a thought were it not for his shoulders tensing when he’d faced forward again. Quiet anxiety settled over him, which doesn't suit him.
Y/N ignored it, wrapped up in her own murky thoughts. She lightly tapped her foot but the sound sinks into the floor mat of the Impala. She couldn’t show Dean that the closer they get to their destination the less at ease she felt. Nerves she hadn’t thought she had. It had been her idea, her assurances to Dean that all she would do was go to the bank and leave. Nothing else to do with the case. Still, she was a civilian and even this much involvement was causing her fingers to tremble against her leg. Out of sight, of course, she wouldn’t want him to know. Dean would pull the rug out from under her if he suspected she might not be able to handle it.
You could handle it fine. You were the queen of handling it. You squeeze your hand into a fist anyway to stop your nervous habit in its tracks.
With the bank finally in sight she resolved herself to take control of the situation. Dean was her backup, not the other way around. This was another Thursday morning visit to an establishment she had been time and again. She would walk into the white stone building and do the same thing she has a hundred times before. And then Dean—plus Sam who is at the motel in case something comes up—would stay. Y/N had already wrestled with the idea that her actions might also cause the shifter to stay, but that felt like a necessary evil. If they killed the shifter now then she was saving a life down the road. Which in her more selfless moments was the motivation that she clung to desperately. In her own infinitesimal way, she was helping to save someone. The path that had brought her here, to this new version of herself, was one that ultimately made her braver. If only at the very last minute.
It’s rare that the voice says exactly what you need to hear. Although in the grand scheme of things the voice has only been around for a few weeks. It just feels longer because you’re not supposed to hear a voice in your head at all. On this occasion though she’s helpful. You step out of the car with a renewed sense of purpose. Once you start going through the motions, that begin with walking the steps up to the entrance, you really did calm down. This is the same old song and dance. And even if it wasn’t, you're brave now, because she'd said so.
The bank is familiar territory. You’ve come here before to stop payments for legitimate reasons, you’ve been here to authorize money orders and verify paperwork. Sometimes you’re here for your personal banking too. It’s like Cheers if the show was about a financial institution; everyone knows your name.
Dean stays hot on your heels but doesn’t say anything at first. He’s silent as he holds the door open for you. Then as you’re walking towards the first teller he bumps your shoulder and nods at the man standing a few desks over, finally breaking the silence, “that your boyfriend?”
You stop dead and turn to him. Shocked by his audacity. Not only because he made a joke while your back is tense and your jaw firm, but for making you smile despite your resistance. Oh and there’s the fact that the teller he’s motioning at is a fifty-nine-year-old man with the largest bald spot you’ve ever seen, short of being actually bald.
“You’d make a cute couple.” He adds with a shrug, somehow resisting grinning, which might add insult to injury.
You feel your shoulders sink, the tension rolling away, and you try to bite back your laughter, and fail. “I’m not his type, but hey, you might be. Go and introduce yourself.”
“I would but I’ve got to stay here and keep an eye on you.”
She doesn’t miss the emphasis, exactly as she hadn’t missed the way he’d complimented her when he picked her up. Or the way he’s looking at her now. As if they’re not in the middle of a bank, in the middle of the day, but in a bar somewhere about to make some bad decisions. She found it easy to push away her own feelings and refocus when there’s work to be done. However it was becoming more difficult to ignore Dean’s potential feelings. Not only did she not know if she was misreading the situation, but even if she wasn’t; what could she possibly do about it now?
“Next.” The sandy-haired woman you haven’t seen before calls, making it easy to ignore him, and the voice.
“Hi. I’ve got an appointment with Mr. Jones to submit some financial reports on behalf of First National.”
She nods, “his receptionist is out sick today. Give me a second and I’ll go check if he’s ready to see you yet.”
She wanders off and you turn to Dean and the curiosity he's wearing on his face. He leans in closer than he needs to and whispers to you, “we have an appointment?”
“Yeah, in real life you usually need an appointment for these kinds of things. Plus I told my boss I was coming so he asked me to bring in last month's report backups to save someone else a trip.”
He ignores your reference to real-life versus his life as if he's not standing there; existing. “You told your boss?”
They get away with so much in the books that clearly they have no idea how things work for normal people. “I told you this needed approval, I made up some anomaly and he signed it off.”
Dean looks at you like he’s thinking the exact same thing you were. That life is much simpler when you lie through your teeth.
The teller that you don’t know returns and he steps back freeing up your personal space. Truthfully you hadn't realized he was still that close. She leads you to a small office with ‘Mr. Jones’ painted on the door before knocking and leaving.
“Y/N, always a pleasure to see you. Sorry about the wait.” Ben beams as he opens the office door, hiding his surprise to see Dean trailing behind you. “You haven’t been by in a while?”
You shake the hand he’s offering you with a smile, “they've been keeping me busy. Luckily I had something I needed to  be rushed through so I jumped on the opportunity to come by.”
Dean closes the office door behind him and clears his throat.
“Oh, sorry. Ben, this is my colleague Dean.” You only comprehend that you’re supposed to use an alias for him after his name slips out. It’s only a first name though, that doesn’t count, hopefully. You tuck your hair behind your ear in an attempt to throw him a quick, apologetic look. “He’s new. I’m showing him the ropes.”
Ben shakes Dean's hand and does an excellent job hiding how tight Dean’s grip is. Something you see evidence in when his knuckles pop white.
You all take a seat and then everything becomes simple, routine. You hand over the financial reports and Ben takes a cursory look at them. He promises to dedicate proper time to them later.  There’s small talk over mutual acquaintances from your office and some disputes from the month before last. This is something many of your colleagues have done before you. Someone always has business here and paper backups need to  be brought in. So, over the years, it became a standing catch-all appointment. Reports and insurance and some chit chat. Nothing out of the ordinary.
“There is one more thing.” You begin in a charming tone.
Ben lets out a small business like chuckle from behind his desk, “of course there is. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be talking to you.”
You pull out a few sheets of stapled forms that Mark signed off yesterday afternoon. “It’s nothing really. We submitted this claim for payment but have since found some irregularities. I was hoping you could stop the transfer until we straighten everything out.”
“You wouldn’t ask unless we still had time, so I don’t see why not.” He takes the papers and checks if everything is in order before he starts typing on the screen in front of him.
For the first time since you walked into the office, your attention isn’t required on the banker in front of you, so you check in on Dean. He’s staring intently at Ben, hard eyes that are trying to bore a hole in the man’s skull. It's a good thing Ben has been focused on you and not noticed.
“All done. Don’t tell me that’s all you came in for?” Ben calls your attention back.
You shrug, “you know me. I like to do these things myself.”
He nods, understanding, and stands up at the same time you do.  He holds out his hand again, bending towards you a little as he takes yours, “that’s because you’re nothing if not thorough.”
There’s a scoff from behind you that you ignore because you are indeed   thorough, and whatever Dean wants to say can wait until you’re outside.
“I could say the same for you. Thanks for your help, Ben.”
You make a hasty exit and get halfway across the tiled floors outside of Ben's office before Dean speaks again. “That’s the guy then, huh? Think you'd do better with Danny DeVito over there.”
There’s none of his playfulness this time. Nothing inappropriate or light about his mood. Even with his callback to something that had been a joke earlier, his words are as steely and hard as he’d been staring at Ben.
Something familiar brews in your gut. It’s stormy and turbulent. It’s the hint of an argument on the tip of your tongue. Dean has turned serious for some reason and he's sending you hurtling towards angry.
“Not that it’s any of your business,” you’re grinding the words out through your teeth at a volume only he will hear, “but no. Ben is married. Besides you’re the one who started this joke, I never said anything about having a boyfriend.” You’re storming towards the doors because you’re not prone to making a scene and you don't intend to start now.
Infuriatingly he says nothing. No smart-mouthed comeback that forces her to be equal parts furious and infatuated, which means that each step until she hits the fresh air outside is like another twist on a wind-up toy. Eventually, she’s going to snap.
Y/N hadn’t felt like this since they’d broken into her office. She’d found herself falling in other ways since then, but the anger had dissipated since that night until it faded away altogether. In an instant, his irrational reaction has sparked the flame again. She had done exactly what she was supposed to have done, and she had done it well. No suspicion or fumbling over her words. Before he’d opened his mouth she might have even been proud of herself.
You had indeed been proud of yourself. Ben had no clue and he’dstopped the payment like needed him to do. You pace on the sidewalk. A few steps on the spot wondering what in the hell is going on. He is supposed to be giving you a ride home so you can work. Both the Winchesters insisted that the office might not be safe until the shifter was dead. Since all roads lead back to you and all google searches lead back to your office building.
That all would be well and good if you weren't so livid you can’t even see straight. Worse than that, you have no idea why you're quite as angry as you are.
She'd left him standing inside, feet planted in the same spot he'd been in when she told him off. She'd gone without him or his permission to leave, and she hoped her act of defiance annoyed him half as much as she was. Y/N considered walking away, there was a bus stop around the corner and she could get most of the way home. Public transport would give her a chance to rest outside of his car that smells of worn leather mingled with his scent. She inhales until fresh air fills her stomach, then her chest and then she holds it. A borrowed breathing technique from the week of yoga she took years ago. Her lips shake with her exhale and it helps. Not to explain anything, not his reaction nor hers, but her heart rate steadies. She'd be mad about calming herself down so immediately if she hadn't just calmed herself down.
You don't turn around when you hear his footsteps catching up behind you  however you do stop pacing. You're a fair woman and you'll give him the chance to apologize.
"Get in, I'll take you home."
His hand is on the Impala when you spin to face him, he's about to get in and expects you to follow him. He tosses his head in the direction of the car telling you as much.
"No."
"Y/N, get in." One foot moves in your direction and before he can take a full step you tell him again.
"Didn't you hear the first time? No."
In that crystalizing moment, Y/N decided that she did, in fact...
"Oh, you can shut up too!"  You spit out, eyes flicking to the sky because, where else do you look when you're shouting at a writer's voice in your head?
You're not concerned about your outburst towards the voice in front of Dean. Instead of worrying you turn before he can stop you, and you know immediately that you are making the right decision. How? Because the voice does shut up, which meant whatever she wanted involved you staying there and talking to Dean, not striding away to the bus stop.
You can see the bus shelter in a few minutes. There's a woman there, along with her son, waiting not so  patiently. It's surprising to see anybody there in the middle of the day. The bus stop hadn't been far from the bank but you suppose it took him a moment to get in his car and debate leaving you, so that's why you make it this far before you hear him pull up.
He slows to a crawl in the road beside you, engine low but still rumbling away and burning fuel. "Would you stop being so stubborn and let me take you home?"
That doesn't sound like much of an apology. Or any apology at all.
"Come on sweetheart, please? I need to get you safe."
If he wasn't Dean Winchester then that line would sound like macho bullshit. Except, he is Dean Winchester. It had only been an hour ago you were scared to even go to the bank. And he might not have said sorry but he did, at long last, say please.
You're not giving up, you're heels are a little higher than normal is all and a ride home would save your feet.
You don't say anything as you step to the passenger side door, he doesn't say anything as he stops the car completely. You're both good at that. Silence.
The seat is as soft as it had been at the start of her day. The music is at the same volume he'd set it at when he realized she wasn't looking for a conversation. The difference was, she wasn't tapping her foot to fight the nerves now. Y/N was too busy cycling through the last hour of her life like each minute was an index card in a library catalog. Or, say, a folder in an insurance filing cabinet. She was, mostly, confused. Everything had been smooth sailing, in a way her life hadn't been since she found out that monsters existed. And then things changed. Flip flopped. Again. Until she's back in his car, unable to escape him. Realizing that she never had a chance to.
You sigh. It was your own fault for thinking you could step off of this insane rollercoaster that was your life. The voice was never going to leave, Dean would, and in a year's time you'd be rocking yourself to sleep inside the asylum you'll be living in by then. Assuming you weren't dead.
When he pulls up outside your house you're up and out before Baby has stopped, "bye Dean."
You don't dream that he's going to follow you.
You don't imagine he's going to walk you to your door and stop the key in the lock with his hand on his shoulder.
You don't ever expect him to kiss you.
Dean has a hundred rules, though he only ever cites one or two at a time. One he's quoted time and again to Sam, "you don't kiss the girl till the fat lady sings." Or till the monster is dead, as the case may be. He has broken this rule a hundred times before, since a rolling Dean gathers no moss.
Y/N doesn't know that, even if she did, she wouldn't care. She has her hand wrapped around his tie, using it to pull him closer, tasting him and moaning into his mouth. Grateful for the extra height of her heels today. Thankful for a chance to feel his full lips against her own. She kisses him back until she's lightheaded and a little longer still.  Y/N had found the new life that was worth dying for and it resided in the space between their mouths, it was wrapped up in kissing him.
You laugh breathlessly as he pulls back, "so, I did a good job today?"
Dean hooks a finger under your chin and presses another chaste, brief kiss to your bruised lips. "Such a good job, sweetheart."
And then he says his goodbyes because he has a job to do and it’s still the middle of the day. He leaves you after making you promise to stay at home and safe. He tells you he's going to call when everything has 'blown over'.
You're still giddy when you get inside and lock the door. Smiling as you start up your work laptop and turn on your tea kettle. Cheeks flushed pink when you hear the ping of new emails on your computer.
Hi Y/N,
I'd say sorry that this took so long except you said it yourself, you didn't have a lot to go on. Guess you're lucky that I'm the best. The names Emma Eiffel. Couldn't get you a phone number but I did manage to get you an address out in Des Moines. Details below.
Normal fees are fine.

Seeking Mercy-Chapter 1
Tumblr media
A/N: Here it is. The third act of this story that, to be honest, is just a one-shot that took on a life of it’s own. LOL!! I want to thank @the--blackdahlia for the awesome aesthetic she made for this!!
And now back to the Dean/YN/Adam saga.
Stepping out of the shower, she dries off before moisturizing her skin, grimacing at the feel of the blemishes that mar her body.
The few wounds she carries aren’t what bothers her though; no, she wears those with honor. It’s the discolored, thin and ragged lines that taunt her. But, after carrying two children inside her womb, what does she expect?
She knows she should feel this way. Her husband has done more than enough to prove to her that he still loves and wants her. And she loves her kids with everything in her.
Their daughter is a rambunctious 4 year old who is into everything and wants to learn anything she can. That’s why she is in her 2nd year of preschool. Their son is as rough and rowdy as any 3 year old little boy could be. They both take after their father in more ways than just looks.
Once dressed, she heads out of the bathroom to Kash’s room to make sure he is still down for his nap. She still can’t believe she let the man she married name their son after one of his favorite songs; well, ‘let’ might not be the word to use.
After being in labor with him for over 48 hours, she had to have a cesarean and after they delivered him, she began hemorrhaging and almost died before they got the bleeding to stop. Needless to say, she was out of it when it came to naming their newborn son, leaving the task to her husband. The paperwork was already in place by the time she woke up.
The little sandy-brown haired boy was sleeping soundly in his bed so she continued on through the house toward the kitchen. She had to get dinner started shortly because their dad was picking their daughter up from school on his way home from work.
He and his partner had been called in for backup on a case and had been gone for three days. He had promised though that they were returning today and he would do the school pickup, knowing it would surprise his little girl; to have her big, brave dad be in the pickup line outside of the schoolhouse. But she also suspected that he liked the attention all the staff gave him when he showed up in his suit. One thing is for sure, he looked really great all dressed up.

Dean, Sam and Mary walk into the station at the Stillwater Headquarters, all suited up and ready to play their “parts”; Agents Criss and Frehley, along with their lackie/agent-in-training Ms. Ronstadt.
Dean smiles at the receptionist and points toward Donna’s office, which the receptionist nods the okay for them to enter. As soon as Dean opens the door though, he can tell something is off; Donna looks shocked and surprised to see them. She hurries and puts something away into a desk drawer and locks it before standing up and smiling.
“Dean. Sam,” she says as she walks around the desk between them. “How good to see you.”
“Yea, you too Donna,” Sam says and side-eyes Dean, questioningly. “Uh, you called about a case.”
“Really?” Donna answers, leaning her head to the side. “Oh! That’s right. I did. Duh, it’s been crazy around here lately.”
“So, Stillwater isn’t all that still, huh?” Mary asks, drawing Donna and both boys’ attention to her. Donna squints her eyes and looks at the woman standing behind the two giants.
“Who are you?”
Dean looks around, making sure no one can overhear him and then puts his arms around Mary’s shoulders.
“Donna Hanscum, meet Mary Winchester. Our mother,” he announces with pride.
“Well, now ain’t that just a kick in the pants,” Donna says with a smile spread across her face. “I’ve always wanted to meet ya!” She stretches her hand toward Mary. “Where have they kept you hidden away?”
At that point, Dean knows something is amiss. Sheriff Donna Hanscum is well aware that Mary Winchester died in 1983. Throughout the years since they’d met the kooky officer, they had all become pretty close; hell, Donna was a bridesmaid at his and Y/n’s makeshift wedding. Donna knew their mom was dead.
‘Was’ being the operative word, seeing as the woman in question is standing there shaking hands with their friend and associate. Dean takes the time to get a good look at their colleague, seeing if he could tell what was wrong with her.
Tumblr media
As Dean scans over Donna’s features, he takes notice of the way her uniform is neat and clean. Donna Hanscum usually has at least one stain on her uniform shirt before lunch but here it is late afternoon and the outfit looks like it just came from the cleaners. Dean looks over the women’s heads at Sam to see if he has caught the little nuances.
"Uh Donna-" Sam speaks up after his and Dean's silent conversation; something was definitely going on with the perky sheriff. "-you called us. Pretty sure you had a case of our kind here?" Sam reminds her.
"Oh," the sheriff sighs. "Sure, sure. Well, I took care of that."
Dean notices how Donna's eyes dart around the room, not making contact with any of them.
"Well, what was it?"
"Um, it was just some kids goofing off."
"Kids?" Dean asks, inquisitive. "How were kids making other people disappear and then come back changed? Like they were coming off a massive binge?"
"Oh, is that what I said?" Donna answers, acting even more squirrelly. "Uh, I was wrong."
"Well, I think we're gonna stick around and interview a couple of them," Sam says, Mary and Dean nodding in agreement.
"Okie dokie!"
Tumblr media
Hearing the front door open, she knew it was just a matter of time before her daughter would come bursting through, happy that her dad was home and had picked her up from school.
Sure enough, the little brown-haired girl came running in with the biggest smile on her face; her green eyes sparkling.
"Hi mom."
“Hey sweetie," she says as she stirs the pasta. "How was school?"
As she listens to her daughter recount the events of her day,  her eyes catch movement behind the kid.
As he walks in, her breath catches in her chest. Seven years of marriage and two kids later and he still takes her breath away! Tall and built, chiseled cheekbones,  bright green eyes surrounded by laugh lines when he smiled and sandy brown hair styled to perfection. He was literally sex on bowed legs.
Once the little girl was done with her account of her day, she slid off the chair and headed upstairs.
Her husband sauntered over to her with a smirk on his face. He knew the effect he had on her,  she had told him once not so long ago.
"I missed you D," he says as he puts a finger under her chin and raises it to capture her lips. "So fucking much."
"Missed you too babe," she whines. "And, I got done while you were gone."
"Done? Done with wh…" he trails off once realization hits. "Oh. Aunt Flo finally left?"
"Yep," she says, popping the 'p'.
"What a welcome home!" He chuckles as his hand slides down her side and slips between her thighs. "My dick sure has missed this pussy."
Her eyes roll as he applies pressure to the seam of her jean shorts right against her clit.
"If I could I'd bend you over and fuck you right here, right now."
Tumblr media
Her whimpers are drowned out when Kash's cries sound through the monitor on the counter.
"Daddy duty calls."
With another kiss, he takes his hand from her crotch and sniffs his fingers before turning around to head upstairs.
At the bottom step he pauses and looks over his shoulder. "I'll show you tonight just how much I've missed you."
A shudder runs through her at his promise.  'That man is going to be the death of me', she thinks as she watches him ascend the steps.

Happy Birthday, John Kennex
In honor of Karl Urban’s birthday, I wrote a little birthday fic to go along with Soulbound.  John Kennex’s birthday is June 7, 2007.
Tumblr media
Disclaimer: I only own my OCs
Word count: 1900+
Rating: 18+
Warnings: brief mentions of anxiety, asthma and self harm
-1-
Emily smiled and waved to the nurses on duty as she walked by the nurses’ station.  Sara was on duty, she noted, rolling her eyes when the woman winked at her.  She clutched the little malachite dragon she carried a little tighter in her right hand before letting herself into John’s room.
Her heart stuttered in her chest when she saw the detective, still unconscious.  Someone had shaved off his stubble earlier and had given his dark brown hair a trim.
She had to swallow a few times before she managed to find her voice.  “I… I, uh… have it on good authority that today is your birthday,” she blushed when she realized her voice sounded a little on the breathy side.  Oh, lord…  At least I’m not wheezing.  “The big Four-O,” she placed the dragon on the bedside table next to the photograph of John and his partner, Marty Pelham, and Marty’s wife Maria and son Marty Junior.  “But don’t worry,” her breathy voice took on a teasing tone.  “I won’t tell anyone your real age.  Sandy and I will keep it a secret.”
She busied herself with her normal routine upon arriving for her daily visits.  She straightened his blanket over his chest, smoothed her hands over his chest and arms to make sure the wrinkles were out, grounding herself to keep her anxiety at bay.  She blushed when she felt his heartbeat kick a little harder when her palm brushed over his chest.  “I’m beginning to think you really enjoy my visits even though I’m the most boring and awkward visitor you’ve got,” she teased.  “Yeah, I know.  I shouldn’t talk down on myself like I do but I am awkward and I’m sure what I talk about is boring.”
Finally, she squeezed his fingers and ran her fingers through his shorter hair.  “I miss the scruff,” she admitted softly as she traced her fingertips along his smooth jaw.  Her blush darkened when she realized she’d spoken out loud this time.  “Oh, god, don’t mind me,” she giggled nervously.  “I didn’t mean to say that out loud.  I…”  She drew in a deep breath and slowly released it.  “You look very nice when you’re clean-shaven, but you also look pretty hot when you’re scruffy,” she confessed with a half-sigh, half-whisper.  “I…  I don’t know why I find it so easy to talk to you, to admit things that I know I’d never be able to say out loud if you were actually awake… much less be able to open up to anyone else...  I…  I probably would never be able to talk to you if you were conscious…  I mean, I’m…  I’m nobody.  And you’re…  You’re you.  You probably wouldn’t even give me a second thought,” she turned away from the bed to walk over to the window.  “I’m such a painfully shy and awkward person with anxiety and asthma, no one looks twice at me as it is,” she wrapped her arms around her stomach before she growled at herself.  “I’m sorry, ignore me.  I’m just…  I know I’m hard on myself,” she admitted quietly.  “It’s your birthday.  I’m supposed to be happy and in a celebratory mood, but you already know how I feel about birthdays.  But I am happy, in a way.  I’m hanging out with the best-looking guy in the world, even if he doesn’t know I exist.”  She returned to the bed and leaned down.  “Happy birthday, John,” she whispered before kissing his cheek.  “I brought you a present.  I know I didn’t have to, but after I accidentally caught a glimpse of the tattoo on your arm I knew what I would get you for your birthday or Christmas.  I like dragons, but I prefer the European ones to the Chinese ones.  I found a Chinese dragon carved in malachite at a shop near campus and had to get it for you.  It’s really pretty.”  She moved away from the bed to sit down in the chair.  “So…  I’m thinking about applying for an internship through the Synthetic Dispatch Division.  Dr. Lom is open to taking on an intern.  I’m scared to death I won’t get the internship if I do apply, but I won’t know unless I try, right?  I haven’t talked to Sandy about it, not yet.  We’re meeting for drinks later at McQuade’s.”
She grew quiet as she watched his chest rise and fall with each breath he took.  “Maybe someday we could go out for a drink after you wake up.”  When she realized what she’d said, she quickly backpedalled, stammering and blushing hard before she could string a coherent sentence together.  “I…  I really need to shut up, huh?  Not go out like as in a date or something like that, I could only ever dream of going on a date with you.”  She blushed harder and smacked her hands over her face.  “Shit.  God, Emily, you’re such a damned idiot!”  She cussed at herself.  “Drinks between friends.”
She scrubbed her hands over her face.  “You’ve come to mean a lot to me in such a short period of time already,” she reached for his hand.  “You let me ramble and babble when I get nervous or anxious and somehow I feel much calmer when I hold your hand.  And I’ve rambled and babbled a lot already today.”  She took a deep breath and grimaced when she wheezed.  “It’s a beautiful day out today.  Couldn’t ask for prettier skies.  The sunrise this morning was gorgeous…”
-2-
Thunder rattled the windows of the hospital room.  Must be storming.  Dammit.  Emily better not be out driving in this.  I want her here but I don’t want her to get into a wreck either.  Sam, I hope you and Lizzie are watching over your daughter, please don’t let anything happen to her.  She has no idea how much she means to me.
Another rumble of thunder rattled the windows, drowning out the whoosh of the door sliding open.  The scent of vanilla cupcakes reached him and he breathed an internal sigh of relief.
Emily was safe.  She was there.
The door swooshed open again, followed by the scent of raspberries.  Sara, his favorite nurse.  She was nice, always talking to him when she was checking on him.  Always making sure he had the softer blankets or more supportive pillow.  “Here’s the towels you requested, Em.”
“Thanks, Sara, I don’t want Karen or Tim hollering at me for dripping all over the room,” Emily’s voice was filled with light-hearted amusement.
Sara laughed.  “They won’t holler, Em.  Karen will give you the look and chastise you before she hugs you, and Tim is such a good-natured soul.  They’ll chalk it up to job security.  Anything else you need?”
“Nah, thank you, I’ll holler if I do.”
The door swooshed open and shut again, leaving him alone with Emily.  He listened to the gentle rustle of fabric, towel maybe, before the sound of a raincoat being shrugged off reached his ears.
“Hi, John,” her voice sounded a little regretful.  “I wasn’t ignoring you, I promise.  I’m dripping all over the place and don’t want the housekeeping staff to worry about my coat and boots dripping all over.”  Her voice strained before he heard the slide of two zippers.  “It’s nasty out today.  The storm didn’t hit until I was halfway here.”
Should’ve stopped somewhere to wait it out, Sweetheart, I don’t want you risking your life just to spend time with me.
“I know, I could’ve pulled off to wait it out but it hasn’t let up at all and I didn’t want to sit in my car in a sketchy parking lot,” her hands brushed his chest as she straightened the blankets.
His heart thumped harder when he felt her palm settle over it.  Good call.  But I still don’t want you driving in a storm, Emily.  I’m not worth you getting hurt.
“I couldn’t miss my favorite guy’s birthday today,” her breath puffed over his cheek before her plush lips pressed against the stubble.
Favorite guy, huh?  Sweetheart…  He wished he could turn his head, to feel her soft lips on his.  He settled for feeling her smile curve on his cheek instead.
“Happy birthday, John.  Whenever you wake up you’re going to have a lot of cards and a few gifts,” the chair scraped closer to the bed.  Her hand curled around his.  “Just because you’re in a coma doesn’t mean anyone who loves you can get away with ignoring birthdays and holidays.  Sandy’s got a box she’s putting them in for you.  I didn’t bring a gift with me today, it’s at Sandy’s.  I wasn’t about to bring it with me.”  Her breath hitched on a wheeze.  “I finally worked up the courage to go through Daddy’s stuff and found a few guitars I never knew he had.  Sandy told me you collect guitars, that you play a little, and I asked her if maybe I should give them to you.  They’re vintage, from the 1970s and 80s.  Or would they be considered antiques?  I don’t know.  They’re beautiful, though.  One’s an acoustic and the others are electric.  Daddy even had sheet music for some of the old classic rock songs.  I sent those over with the guitars.”
Sweetheart, they’re your dad’s, you should keep them.
“I don’t have the room in my apartment for them, I don’t want for them to remain in their cases tucked away in a closet.  They’re meant to be picked up and played and proudly displayed.  I don’t know how to play, other than random strumming that sounds god awful.  I never was musically-inclined growing up, I would’ve taken the amp apart to see how it works and if I could improve it,” she laughed softly.  “Maybe that’s why Daddy had them in storage, to keep me from doing just that.  I…  I would like to learn how to at least play a few chords, though.”
I could teach you.  Not that hard.  I’ll get a guitar in your hands and sit behind you, wrap my arms around you to guide your hands.  He groaned.  Slow down, Kennex, he warned himself when he felt arousal stirring in his belly just from the image in his head.  Dammit.
Her fingers laced through his.  “I hope you will like them.”
I already do, Sweetheart…
-3-
The gentle press of soft, plush lips on his woke him up.  John groaned, wrapping his arms around Emily.  “Mornin’, Baby,” he murmured before deepening the kiss.
She braced her hands against his shoulder and shoved.  “You’re ruining the moment!”  She giggled when he pinned her beneath him and attacked her neck with voracious kisses.  “John!”
He lifted his head.  “You started it by kissing me awake, Baby.”  He frowned when tears glistened in her baby blue eyes.  “Emily?”
“I get to look into your eyes this time when I say it,” her voice cracked as a tear slipped down her temple into her dark hair.  “Happy birthday, John.”
John cupped her cheek and brushed the tear away with his thumb.  “Baby, don’t start cryin’ on me,” he chastised gently, shifting onto his back and tucking her to his side.  “What are your plans today?”
“We’re not going to spend your birthday with you in bed and me in a chair holding your hand,” she retorted.
“How ‘bout we both spend the day in bed?”
She giggled.  “John!”
“It’s my birthday, can’t I pick how we spend the day?”  He quirked an eyebrow at her.
“What about your birthday cupcakes or breakfast or your present--”
He hauled her on top of him and silenced her protest with a kiss.  “Later.  Much… much later,” he growled between kisses.

Which are you favourite rwby songs? And why?
Oh man, there are sooooo many. All of them are sooooo good! But I’ll do a brief Top 5 list:
5. Cold from Volume 3: It is a heartbreaking song, both in-show and out of it. But I’m the kind fo person that really likes emotional music, and this one was beautiful. It’s a song about grief after you lose someone you love and you just feel cold, but you still have to go on. And you will, just not today. A perfect end song for RWBY V3, as well as to the memory of Monty.
4. Al That Matters from Volume 5: Like above, it’s an emotional song. This one is about wanting to let someone back in, but still feeling hurt that they left you and being afraid of it happening again. It can be applied to so many things. Romance, friendship, family, anyone that you cared for once who hurt you yet you don’t want to let them go. It was super fitting for the Blake and Yang stuff, and is both sad but heartwarming all at once.
3. Red Like Roses, Part II from Volume 1: This is the song that sold me on RWBY. The music was the thing that drew me in, and this song along with RWBY vs the Nevermore is what made me stay. It is so freakin’ badass while having  lot of anger and bitterness from Casey's parts, and grief and fear form Sandy’s (Casey’s mom) parts. It’s crazy that it’s a Ruby song since this doesn't match her personality, but especially after V7, it’s very fitting and tells you so much about both Ruby and Summer, the former about her feeling losing her mother, and the latter knowing that she’s pretty much doomed her daughter to a never-ending war.
2. Rising from Volume 6: It’s just awesome. It perfectly describes V6′s themes of broken faith but regaining hope so perfectly. Jeff is VERY good at making songs about how the world is beating you down, but you fight back anyways and this is just another example. There’s not much to say about it, it just rocks and I love it~
1. Indomitable from Volume 6: My favorite song thus far. I love this song so much. it is a very inspiring song about being inspired and never giving up. About how no matter how insignificant something may seem, it can truly become something amazing, even if that thing won’t last forever. And how even when the one who inspired you is gone, their memory never dies. It’s, of course, a clear tribute to Monty, only instead of being about the grief, it’s about living b the example he set and of course doing what he always told everyone and weaved into the show: to keep moving forward. I cried when I first heard it, and it is a true masterpiece.

How To Care For Your Stella
Send me a song/word/quote and I’ll write a fic based on it (or just send me prompt)
Prompt: Stella comes home after a long day of work and Scully made her dinner and does everything to take care of her for the evening
AO3
Rating: E for Elephant Explicit
Stella slumped down onto the sofa, not bothering to put her jacket nor her handbag properly away, dumping them on the floor by her feet. She kicked her heels off and flexed her toes, blisters had begun to form where the opening of the heel met her ankle.
“Stella?” An American voice called out from the kitchen.
“Yes?” She replied, before Scully appeared behind her, a camel coloured cardigan hanging from her shoulders.
“Just checking it’s you.” Scully replied sitting down next to Stella, who was now rubbing her feet, giving herself a massage.
“Trust me, it wouldn’t be anyone else.” Stella let her feet go down to the ground, bringing a hand to her forehead, a useless massage for the headache that had blossomed at around 2:30pm that day, brought on by the ramblings of, now who was it? Paterson. Ah yes, that was right. Moe Paterson and his aimless, useless ramblings about… A murderous, bed ridden, 90 year old woman. Stella had had to resist the urge to tell him to his face that he was talking complete and utter bullshit.
“Stella?”
“Hm?”
“I asked you, how was work?” Stella blinked slowly, a look of realisation appearing across her face.
“Work was… It wasn’t good. I’ve never heard so much complete shit then had to do paperwork about it! According to one of my men a 90 year old woman who can’t even get out of bed murdered a perfectly able-bodied 27 year old man. In what world exactly is that possible?!” Stella had snapped, the exhaustion and stress of work leaving a smog like substance to cloud her thoughts.
“Well, actually me and Mul-“ Stella shot her a look of “this is not an X-Files case this is just a moron talking” Scully stopped, realising what she was admitting.
“Do you want me to make you some dinner?” Scully asked, her voice tender now as she lay a hand on Stella’s pencil skirt covered thigh.
“Please.” Stella said, a tired smile on her lips, Scully kissed her softly.
“Okay.”
A tub of mint choc chip ice cream defrosted as they finished the spaghetti bolognaise that Scully had prepared. Stella thought it was surprisingly good for something that Scully could cook, after all the prior incidents in the kitchen (salt instead of sugar in a ycake, ketchup rather than tomato sauce and somehow burnt soup?) although Scully hadn’t let her be privy to the fact that it was in fact from a box and all she’d really done was boil some pasta. The threw around idle chatter. “Did you buy some more tissues?” “When is that open evening at the university?” “Remind me to pick up some makeup remover at Superdrug.” After they finished the spaghetti bolognaise Scully washed the plates, letting Stella sit and watch, she then dished up the ice cream, two perfectly round balls of artificial mint coloured ice cream to each ceramic bowl. The ate in comfortable silence, the only sounds the clangs of the aluminium spoons against the bowls.
“Do you want to do a face mask?” Scully asked, as Stella yawned while she scraped her spoon over the bowl, picking up the remaining liquid morsels of ice cream.
“That sounds good. I haven’t had the chance for a while, I’ve been so busy at work.”
“I know, Stel.” Scully said, looking at her, the urge to doctor away Stella’s exhaustion tempting but she let the thought go, knowing that Stella wouldn’t much care for it.
They applied the face masks to each other, Scully applying the garishly turquoise “Dead Sea Mud Mask” on Stella’s smooth skin, staining it unnaturally blue. Stella slathered Scully’s face in a coconut based mask, the white mud like liquid - she wasn’t sure if she could call it a liquid - sticking to her fingers looking unsurprisingly like something else. She raised an eyebrow at Scully.
“Sometimes you’re such a tease.” Scully said, laughing, her words sounding like something coming out of a 50s Sandy from Grease type of girl.
“Well, that seems to be the attraction. Isn’t it?” Stella asked.
“That’s what you do, tease and tempt people then they fall for you.” Scully said, washing her hands, the water splattering the sleeves of her cardigan.
“You fell for me, didn’t you?” Stella smiled and sat down, leaning against the side of the bath,
“Yes, and you let me fall for you. You don’t normally let people fall for you. You leave them to fall and let someone else catch them.”
“Now that, my darling, is true.”
They lay in bed, Stella naked besides her cherry blossom pink robe. Scully wore grey satin pyjamas, the colour of a storm cloud. They both respectively read their own books, the twin bedside lamps switched on, leaving a golden glow on everything the light touched. Scully removed her reading glasses and set them down on the bedside table, Stella looked over at her. Scully envied her uncompromised vision.
“Going to sleep?” Stella asked, her book’s page marked as it lay open on her leg.
“Only if you want to.” Scully said, sidling closer to Stella, the mattress shifting below her weight, the covers wrinkling around her. Stella smiled and wrapped a hand in Scully’s hair, kissing her, not quite hard but not that softly either. She drew her mouth away.
“Thank you for today.” She said, a sincerity lingering on her face.
“Stel, I’m here for you, you know that. You’d do that for me, I’d do it for you. It’s called love.” Scully said bringing Stella’s lips back to hers.
“I know.” Stella replied, she slipped a hand inside Scully’s pyjama bottoms, the satin slippery against her hand. She touched her clit through her panties, the cotton chafing slightly, not unpleasantly against her now damp pussy.
“Stella.” She drew out the “a” but not with the anguish from that filmed she’d been forced to watch in Junior English, A Streetcar Named Desire, she thought it was.
“You want me to keep going?” Stella asked, repositioning her body so she was straddling Scully.
“Yes, just let me take these off first.” Before Scully could move to take her bottoms or panties off Stella already had them around her ankles, her fingers already back on Scully’s clit, a pattern rhythmic in a way that it wasn’t boring. Stella could do the most vanilla sex and yet Scully would still admit it was the best sensation she’d ever felt. The ebb and flow of Stella’s soft hands against her flesh, the dip of a fingertip inside her, the feeling of Stella’s own pussy rubbing against her thigh, wetness smeared all over, leaving a shining mark of where Stella had pleasured herself on Scully’s own body. She moaned almost silently as she contracted around Stella’s middle and index finger. Stella returning the pleasure she’d given her as she’d cared for her.

Virgil P.O.V.
T.W. Homophobia
Patton owed me, that was for sure. You don't just drag me out of bed at seven in the morning and expect me to dress up and smile. He didn't even let me put on eyeshadow, and without the gross exaggeration of my eyebags, I looked like I hadn't slept in a full month. Which I hadn't. What can I say? Tumblr gets me.
I groaned loudly and shifted in my seat. They didn't even have the decency to put cushions on these things.
Patton looked at me sternly. "Please be quiet, kiddo. Oh, and put your hood down."
I begrudgingly pulled my hood off of my head.
All I could do was sit and listen to Roman riffing the entirety of the opening song. Which only had like three notes in it.
An hour. Of just sitting. And standing. And sitting. We could be doing something productive, but Patton had gotten it into his head that this would be good for us. No one but me had disagreed. Roman saw it as a chance to show off his voice, Logan decided that the psychological benefits would outweigh the waste of time, and even Deceit had smirked at me and said, "I would hate to accompany you."
So here we were. All five of us, in this massive cathedral, listening to a random dude talk at us about God. I could literally think of nothing worse than this. Then, of course, it got worse.
The homily was supposed to be the most interesting part, or so said Logan. If you had a good priest, then the homily was funny, or relatable. Or something. It was the only part that had even a little bit attracted me. Yeah, that was a mistake.
Our priest started off okay. He said some stuff about the readings, and made some announcements. Then, it all went downhill.
"As I'm sure you all know, today is the first day of Pride Month."
I glanced at Roman. He was probably going to like this, and sure enough, he already had a grin on his face and a sparkle in his eyes. God, he was pretty. I wanted to look at him more, but his head moved slightly in the direction of my face, and I quickly looked away, flushing.
"And as you all know, being homosexual is a sin, punishable by stoning."
I looked at Roman again. His smile faltered.
"This is why, today, I will give any homosexuals listening the chance to repent. After mass, I will be holding a special reconciliation service for sinners. I would strongly encourage you to attend, and repent. Repent!"
I looked at my friends. Deceit was on his phone. Logan looked concerned. Patton looked slightly panicked. And Roman- well, Roman looked scary. I had never seen him like this. Pure rage filled his face, and his hands were balled into fists. I didn't know what he was planning on doing, but I didn't like it.
The priest was still rambling, every second looking more manic and deranged. I looked around at the church. A few people got up and left, and some people just looked around awkwardly. There were a couple looking angry, but no one as livid as Princey.
Patton was trying desperately to calm Roman down before he got up and impaled the minister with his rapier. Why he had a rapier, I didn't know. I suppose for occasions like this.
Then, the priest broke out the slurs.
Roman snapped. Not even Patton could stop him. I was expecting him to walk up there and beat the man with his own (huge) glasses, but he grabbed my hand- well, my hand through the hoodie- and dragged me with him. "What- wait, what are you doing?"
He didn't reply, just pulled me along with no chance of resisting. I was too anxious to even think about the fact that he was holding my hand- through the hoodie.
We made it up onto the sanctuary. He stomped his foot for attention, the sound reaching the back of the building.
The priest faltered. "Now, just what do you think-"
Roman didn't give him a chance to finish. He grabbed my face in his hands, looked me briefly in the eyes, and pressed his lips to mine.
My brain completely short-circuited. It took a whole three seconds to remember to kiss back, but when I did, boy, did I. I hooked my arms around his neck and pulled him closer. I was hyper-aware of everything. His hands around my waist. The slight pressure he applied on his right pointer finger. The high-pitched squeal which I was fairly sure came from Patton. I was probably blushing right through the pale foundation.
We stayed like that for almost twenty seconds when I had to pull back for air. I looked at him. His eyes were bright and alive and his face was just as beautiful as always. His sandy brown hair was a little messed up, but honestly, it just made him hotter. "R-roman... I-I-I..."
"Sorry," he whispered to me.
"W-why? That was... amazing."
A hesitant clap rose to a tremendous roar in a matter of seconds. I pulled the strings of my hood tight so no one could see my face. Roman was bowing in the middle of the platform. Doofus.
The priest looked like he was about to lose it. His face was contorted into the ugliest expression I had ever seen, and I couldn't help laughing. Then, he just kind of stormed out of the building. My face hurt from smiling. Well, that was a first.
A few hours later, it was time for our weekly Disney-a-thon. I was a little unsure that we'd have it, considering everything, but sure enough, at five-thirty on the dot, Patton dragged me out of my room, where I had been residing, daydreaming, all afternoon. I didn't really want to see Prince. I didn't want him to see that I had enjoyed the kiss, just in case it was just to prove a point. I don't know- anxiety works in strange ways. I was sure to apply a little extra foundation and my usual eyeshadow to hide any resulting blushing.
I flopped onto the couch, which was the farthest I could get from Roman, who was sitting in the chair across the room
Patton bounced around, setting everything up. He popped the DVD into our old DVD player, and grabbed the remote to play the movie, which happened to be Emporer's New Groove. It was one of my favorites, although I'd never tell anyone else that.
We were just at the part where Pacha was giving mouth-to-mouth to llama Kuzco when Patton stage-whispered to Logan, "Oh, weren't Roman and Virgil so cute? My kiddos are growing up."
"Shut up!" said Princey and I at the same time.
"Oops! Sorry, guys. Hey, I want popcorn."
Logan looked at him. "Yes- that would be perfect. Shall I assist you?"
"Sure!" Patton giggled.
They left. Quickly.
Deceit looked around awkwardly. "I- I think I will stay here," he said, slithering out of the room.
That left me and Roman alone. I knew this plot. I didn't want to fall for it, but I had to say something. Although, what I had in mind wasn't, "Why?"
Roman looked at me. "Hm?"
"Why did you kiss me? Was it just to prove your point?"
"Yeah," he said dryly, sitting up. "I kissed you for half a minute in front of two hundred people just to shut a homophobe up."
I looked at the ground, blushing. "O-oh."
He got up and strode over to me. "You know, for such a sarcastic person, you'd think you would know how to recognize it."
I looked up. His face was slightly pink, but otherwise, he was his usual confident self. "S-s-sorry?"
He grabbed my hand for the second time that day and pulled me up. I blushed even harder.
"You're so cute flustered," he said. And then he grabbed my collar and kissed me again.
I melted into his touch. His hands grazed the nape of my neck and then ran through my hair. I gasped a little. He laughed against my lips.
"I- stop."
He immediately pulled away, looking guilty. "Did I do something wrong?"
"No- oh God, no- I just want to be sure this isn't a one-time thing."
His face lit up. "You want us to be... boyfriends?"
I smiled a little. "If you want- yeah, that sounds nice."
"Well then! Virgil, can I have the honor of being your boyfriend?"
"Of course, you dork."
He pulled me in again and kissed me gently on my forehead.
"I,"
He kissed me on the cheek.
"Love,"
The other cheek.
"You,"
On the nose. I giggled a little, then flushed, embarrassed.
"Emo,"
On the nose again, to see me give the same reaction. I did.
"Nightmare."
And finally, on the lips.
And then, we heard a camera click.

Pour Me More - Chapter 1: Slow Time
Tumblr media
Summary:  Nicole Haught had the perfect life in California. Surfing before school and parties on the weekend, a beautiful girlfriend, and friends she would die for. That is, until her girlfriend dies. With Nicole plagued by depression, grief, and a failed suicide attempt, Nicole's father sends her to live with family in Purgatory, Canada. Sharing a house with the orphaned Earp sisters, Nicole must learn to adjust to a whole new life of snow, rodeo jocks, and a girl with the smile of an angel that brings up the question of whether she can ever love again.
TW: Mention of past suicide attempt, depression, grief
Available on AO3
I'm going to apologize in advance. When I started writing this fic, I was writing it for myself. Writing has always been my solace in life and once I started writing this, I couldn't stop. It grew into a monster and now I'm unleashing it upon you the readers. Please do not feel like you have to read this. While the suicide attempt is in the past, it does come up often in the story. Thank you to @jaybear1701 for being the primary beta and my other writing buddies including @trylonandperisphere and a bunch of others my brain isn't working right now.
(**the song mentioned in this chapter is called Slow Time by Go Jimmy Go and is available HERE on Spotify**)
It was early morning, the sun just breaking over the horizon and illuminating the long stretch of beach in tones of yellows and oranges. The soft hiss of the sea filled the air, the tide moving out bit by bit with each rush of water and foam.
Nicole stumbled onto the shore, water dripping from shoulder length auburn hair and down slightly tanned skin. She swallowed loudly, her chest heaving from the exertion of her morning surf as she took one slow step after the other, the whites of her brown eyes stained red. It wasn't hard to find the spot she'd marked for herself, a small green and white cabana towel tousled slightly by the wind in the sand near the grassline.
To anyone who didn't know her, she looked like a wayward teen, trying to get a few waves in before school started. She was as wayward as they came, and maybe six months ago the situation would have applied to her, but not anymore.
Six months ago, Nicole would have been far more careful with her board, placing it on the sand with calculated intent, but at that moment, she dropped it on the ground, kicking it mindlessly to at least face the top towards the rising sun. Less than carefully, she yanked at the velcro securing the leash to her ankle before dropping to the towel, struggling against her emotions. A bottle laid tilted in the soft sand and she reached for it, taking a quick pull of the clear liquid that burned all the way down her throat to her belly.
"You shouldn't surf drunk," Shae's voice whispered in her ear, dancing on the seabreeze and testing the limits of her resolve.
Nicole sniffled, feeling the warmth of a tear slipping down her cheek in stark contrast to her chilled skin. At her hip, she untied the net bag that had one object in it, a small metal canister that slid easily into her hand. Unscrewing the airtight container, she expected empty space, but still her eyes filled with more tears, her lip trembling uncontrollably as she let the cap fall from one hand, reaching again for the bottle and messily filling her mouth with vodka before gulping it down with a gag.
"This is what she would want," she told herself as she capped the bottle, setting it aside. She couldn't bear to think of the canister being empty when what remained of her love was now spread between the waves, to become a part of the beach and coral. With a heavy heart, she filled it half with sand before she connected the two parts of the canister once more, setting it aside as she took a minute to look over the beach. Her fingers trembled as she pushed her wet hair behind her ear.
The shoreline was the same as it had been since she was a child, from the time she'd caught her first wave to the time she'd captured her first kiss. But, looking over the light sand and the greenish blue water, it was no longer the paradise it had always been. The cove hadn't changed, but she had. While the tide came in and headed out on schedule, washing away any marred surfaces and leaving behind a fresh shore, she hadn't been so lucky.
Nicole remembered sitting near the shore-break, long tapered fingers drawing hearts in the wet sand as she pressed kisses along dark skin. She remembered whispered words of love and promises of the future that were to be whisked away like the crash of waves washed away the ridiculous hearts.
And now, the water couldn't remove the scars that had been left behind, emotional or physical. Nicole's eyes drifted over the barely healed marks, remembering how the vodka had tasted on her lips as her hands trembled. She didn't remember feeling the physical pain as flesh parted, or maybe it just couldn't combat the hopelessness she felt. Instead, she remembered the beat of music that poured from her speakers, the reggae-soul song that had once brought a smile to her face now bringing nothing but tears. She remembered somehow hearing the familiar singing voice that death had taken from her months before, one that was as real as the sound of her father pounding on her bedroom door.
When you are here, it's the right time. When you're around, it's a nice time. When you are gone, it's a rough time. When you stay away, it's the toughest time. So come back home, Miss Wonderful So time and time and time, time can slow down.
Nicole blinked away another wave of tears as she shook her head, taking a deep breath. Pulling over her board, she tested the surface, finding the wax soft and pliant before covering it with sand, beginning to scrub away the coat with experienced fingers. She tried not to think about this being the last time in a while, how the beach that had held so many treasures in the past would only be a memory in the days to come.
Another tear fell, splashing against the sandy surface that Nicole worked with her hands, making sure to clear away as much wax as possible. She lost herself in the work, feeling like layers of herself were being scrubbed away with the layers of wax. Despite her earlier negligence, the board had been good to her. She couldn't dream of leaving it in storage in poor condition, not when she didn't know when she would pick it up again, or if she ever would. For now, this was the least she could do for the part of her that had been so important.
When she felt she'd done all she could, Nicole gathered her things into her small bag and stood. She picked up the now sand-filled canister once again. It was strange to think about how much heavier sand was than ashes as she moved to the nearby grass. She set it on the ground beneath the familiar coconut tree before pulling out the new blade she'd purchased that morning.
Slowly, she began to scar the bark, being far more careful than she had been three months ago with her own skin. She didn't wipe away the tears that fell as she worked, cuts turning into carefully formed letters. Her own initials were easier, nothing but straight lines, but Shae's were curved, difficult, just like Shae. Nicole finished relatively quickly, running her fingers over the NH + SP in one of those ridiculous hearts that Shae had loved so much before tucking the knife away.
"I'm sorry, Baby." She whispered, pressing her forehead to the rough bark. "I'm sorry I couldn't join you," she added before hefting up her board and turning her back on the beach and the soft hiss of waves breaking on the shore.
This time tomorrow, she would be in Canada, trading sunny beaches for harsh winters to live with an aunt she barely knew, far away from a life she had barely survived.
The rising sun slowly peaked through the patterned curtains as Waverly Earp huddled further under the blanket, trying to block out the light. She was given another two minutes before the alarm went off. With a huff, she let the alarm ring for a bit before she pushed back the blanket and quickly rolled out of bed. She snatched the hoodie from her bedpost and slipped it on as she sleepily headed towards the bathroom. Waverly had never really been a morning person, but was anyone really? She was almost to the door when a flash of color dashed in before her, the bathroom door closing just as she got there. "God damn it, Wynonna," she cursed, hitting the door with a quick punch before rubbing her eyes. She was glad her sister was back, but sometimes... "You're such an asshole."
"Gotta move faster than that, Waves." Wynonna called from the other side of the door as the toilet flushed and she heard the sink running.
"You don't even go to school anymore." Waverly's voice was a defeated whine as she leaned against the wall beside the door, her foot tapping on the floor to distract herself from the screaming of her bladder.
The door opened suddenly and Wynonna straightened her leather jacket, running a hand through her long brunette waves. "I'm taking your Jeep today, remember?"
It took a minute before Waverly recalled, realization dawning on her face. "Shit buckets. Right." How could she forget? She looked over at the room that had only recently been cleaned out. It had been a storage room for as long as she could remember, since the morning they moved in after their father had died… since Wynonna had accidentally killed him. She smiled at her sister who had only been back in town for a month now. "Give me a few minutes and I'll be ready."
"Take your time. Gus made pancakes." Wynonna was a little too giddy as she pushed past her, heading down the stairs.
Waverly shook her head. She knew by the time she got downstairs, her sister would have worked her way through most of the food. She settled for skipping breakfast as she splashed cold water on her face. Whatever kept Wynonna even close to happy, she was okay with it.
She couldn't bear to think of spending another three years without seeing her only close relative. Gus was great and all, but having her sister under the same roof almost reminded her of… before. She tried not to think about it, that night on the homestead when men had broken into their house. She'd only been six, but she understood the screams as her sister was killed, and her father was being dragged out of the house. Wynonna had shoved her in a closet, told her to cover her ears and close her eyes, not to cry, try not to breathe too loudly. But she hadn't listened. She remembered opening the door to watch Wynonna take their father's gun and…
Well, Wynonna had never been the best shot. Not like their sister Willa.
Another splash of freezing water from the faucet against her face and Waverly brought herself back to the present."Stop being so darn morose," she sighed heavily, looking at her reflection. She forced a smile onto her face, taking a deep breath. "Ok, Waverly Earp. Get your hiney in gear." She took another breath before nodding and starting her daily regimen. "You are surrounded by a sphere of positivity," she told her reflection, beginning to apply makeup as she repeated her daily mantra. "Negativity cannot touch you but your positivity can flow out and affect the world around you." She closed her eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath, imagining herself breathing in the light of goodness. She held her breath, willing herself to absorb the positivity until her body was too full, her lungs screaming with the strain. Slowly she exhaled, expelling the darkness and negativity from her body before continuing. "There are blessings everywhere, you just have to open your eyes to see them."
By the time Waverly was ready, her hair pulled up into twin buns and makeup freshly applied, she escaped the bathroom and the negativity she had left behind to quickly dress and grab her book bag, a small skip in her step that hadn't been there moments before. She was flipping through her folder as she entered the kitchen to find Wynonna eating a whole pancake speared on a fork. "It's easier to eat if you cut it," she commented as Gus handed her a glass of orange juice. "Thanks, Gus."
"I saved you some fruit." Gus set the bowl down on the table as she accepted a sheet of paper. "What's this?"
"Emergency contact and doctor info for cheerleading." Waverly smiled before picking a few blueberries out of the bowl.
Gus slipped her glasses on, eyeing the document. "As if there were more than one doctor in Purgatory." She pulled out a pen and began to fill in the boxes and lines before pausing, her eyes narrowing. "When did you join the varsity squad?"
"They let pipsqueaks on the varsity squad?" Wynonna mumbled around a mouthful of pancake.
"Don't be rude." Waverly felt a flare of anger at her sister. "I'll have you know I have the perfect stature for cheerleading."
"Tiny Amazon: perfect stature to get railed by every jock that..."
"Wynonna!" Gus's hand smacked the back of Wynonna's head as she gave her a look of distaste.
Waverly didn't let it phase her as she chewed on a strawberry. Considering just a few months ago she'd been dating Champ, one of the school's best cattle wranglers in the last Purgatory Rodeo, she didn't really have much room to argue. At least she'd come to her senses when he tried to convince her not to take the college course she had enrolled in, saying she didn't need to be so smart because she was pretty enough.
"I've sworn off of all jocks, thank you very much." She stuck her tongue out at her sister. "Besides, I don't really have time for dating. I'm taking that extra class in ancient history and I'm going to be swamped if I'm going to graduate this year." Well, that and she was self aware enough to notice that lately it wasn't just the boys she'd been watching at school. She needed to take some time to figure things out and overanalyze everything as she normally did.
Wynonna shook her head as she pushed up from her chair. "I don't know why you're in such a hurry to graduate."
"Someone in this family should graduate high school." Waverly sniped. She knew it was mean, but still the words slipped out before she could stop them.
To her credit, Wynonna just raised an eyebrow before slinging an arm over her shoulder. "Well… then let's get you to school, Nerd."
Bundled up and prepared for the day, Waverly slipped into the passenger side of her red Jeep. She'd worked at the local pub, Shorty's, all summer, sweeping floors and washing dishes, not only because employment looked great on a college application, but it also allowed her to scrape up enough money to buy what she considered her own bit of freedom. Wynonna didn't drive it often, but after she dinged up Gus's truck something fierce, Gus had been more likely to having Wynonna ask Waverly first.
Wynonna hopped into the Jeep with a grin. "You know, for someone who gets cold easy, you sure picked the worst vehicle possible."
"She may be cold at times, but she's got heart…" Waverly commented, not following up with the silent kinda like you she thought instantly.
"That has got to be," Wynonna started the jeep easily, "the lamest thing I've ever heard you say."
"Haha," Waverly buckled her seatbelt firmly. "Just be careful and keep it...Wynonna!" She screamed as her sister punched the gas and the jeep's tires spun in the snow for a good second before lurching into movement.
Wynonna only laughed.

Oscars 2019
Yep it’s that time of year again, the 91st Annual Academy Awards is on the 24th Feb 2019. An interesting year for the oscars, after announcing there will be no host and that the awards for editing and cinematography won’t be aired lived before revoking that decision. It seems like the awards are up in the air and there were a lot of snubs. After a lot of debates, I have finally narrowed down (sort of) my oscar picks for the year.
Tumblr media
Writing
Adapted Screenplay
“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”Joel Coen and Ethan Coen
“BlacKkKlansman” Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, Kevin Willmott, Spike Lee
“Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty
“If Beale Street Could Talk,” Barry Jenkins
“A Star Is Born,” Eric Roth, Bradley Cooper, Will Fetters
I really loved The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and the six different stories however I struggled to see how they worked together, it very much felt like a broken up film. Can You Ever Forgive Me was a surprisingly intriguing story that uses McCarthy’s performance to keep it going. If Beale Street Could Talk is a beautiful story that focuses on young black lovers that rarely get represented in Hollywood. A Star is Born also a beautiful story that managed to differ from previous versions and provide a unique take on the story in the modern era. Best adapted screenplay for me however is BlacKkKlansman, a powerful and inspiring story that connects America’s past with present times to comment on the absurdity of today’s political climate.
Tumblr media
Original Screenplay
“The Favourite,” Deborah Davis, Tony McNamara
“First Reformed,” Paul Schrader
“Green Book,” Nick Vallelonga, Brian Currie, Peter Farrelly
“Roma,” Alfonso Cuarón
“Vice,” Adam McKay
This was a particularly tough category to choose from. Vice was not my favourite film and I found it rather messy. Green Book was a step up and I loved the character arc of Mortensen’s character. Roma, easily one of my favourite films of the year had a beautiful story and intriguing characters. I really really loved First Reformed. The importance of climate change along with the often contradicting worlds of science and religion and discussions of mental health, this film had an intriguing storyline that really got me thinking. I think however my favourite original screenplay out of these choices (and not just because of the pun) is The Favourite. It is a uniquely strange film that I have never seen anything like before. A comedy period film is a unique blend of genres that I can’t get enough of. With incredible performances from Olivia Coleman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, the interesting look at behind the scenes of the absurd royal family along with lesbian characters that are almost never shown in films of this time period. The Favourite is a fresh story that as sequels and franchises dominate the film industry today, seems extremely rare.
Tumblr media
Technical
Cinematography
“Cold War,” Lukasz Zal
“The Favourite,” Robbie Ryan
“Never Look Away,” Caleb Deschanel
“Roma,” Alfonso Cuarón
“A Star Is Born,” Matthew Libatique
Cold War had particularly stunning cinematography along with The Favourite and Never Look Away. I really loved the cinematography in A Star is Born also. The close proximity of the camera to the couple falling in love as well as on the stage makes this film so intimate. The lighting in this film is incredible and highlights the stunning blue and red colour palette. I think the oscar however should go to Roma cinematographer/director Alfonso Cuarón. I can’t remember the last time I watched a film so visually stunning. The monochrome tone is embraced with the latest digital technology to create a film so stunning it might just win the oscar.
Tumblr media
Visual Effects
“Avengers: Infinity War”
“Christopher Robin”
“First Man”
“Ready Player One”
“Solo: A Star Wars Story”
Both Ready Player One and Solo: A Star Wars Story were disappointments for me and the visual effects were far from revolutionary. Christopher Robin was however a lovely film and the visual effects used to create Winnie the Pooh and his friends were impressive, creating a unique look between cartoon and reality. First Man, one of my favourite films of the year had some stunning visual effects both in heroic scenes and heartbreaking as the mission to the moon played out. My favourite use of visual effects in a film however has to go to Avengers: Infinity War. There can be a lot of stigma around superhero films however you have to be pretty ignorant to ignore what these films are doing. Only 3% of the shots in Infinity War did not use visual effects, entire characters are built around CGI including the incredible performance by Josh Brolin as Thanos. The film has created the entire world of Wakanda and features many space scenes. It is safe to say that the Marvel films are leading the way for visual effects and are definitely deserving of the oscar this year.
Tumblr media
Production Design
“Black Panther,” Hannah Beachler
“First Man,” Nathan Crowley, Kathy Lucas
“The Favourite,” Fiona Crombie, Alice Felton
“Mary Poppins Returns,” John Myhre, Gordon Sim
“Roma,” Eugenio Caballero, Bárbara Enrı́quez
Again, a difficult category to choose from. Mary Poppins Returns was a visually stunning film to watch as the effects and costumes came to light. The Favourite also managed to bring the 17th century to light with its set. First Man was a highly underrated film this year and the production design was incredible as it reimagined the 1960s in a way I haven’t seen before. Roma was one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen and was a very close second along with First Man. The best production design however has to go to Black Panther. The amount of work that went into that film in order to create authenticity was obvious when watching the film. An almost entire African/African American crew and cast made the film authentic with African culture. The costuming/makeup along with the set design/colours and special effects created a visually stunning film that revolutionised the film industry and even shaped history.
Tumblr media
Film Editing
“BlacKkKlansman,” Barry Alexander Brown
“Bohemian Rhapsody,” John Ottman
“Green Book,” Patrick J. Don Vito
“The Favourite,” Yorgos Mavropsaridis
“Vice,” Hank Corwin
I have already expressed my opinions on Vice and I think the editing is where the film went wrong so not entirely sure how it is in this category. Green Book again, a lovely film but not exactly revolutionary. Bohemian Rhapsody I have mixed feelings about, but there is no doubt that the editing to move between the music scenes and dialogue was very well done. The Favourite, again a unique film that uses editing to merge genres like we haven’t seen before. However the oscar for best editing has to go to BlacKkKlansman. The editing in this film is genius. The pacing allows the comedy to work and the politics to hit the audience in just the right moments. The use of split screens and merging images along with the use of the Charlottesville footage at the end allows this masterpiece of a film to bloom. It allows for the comedy and politics to play out at the right moments, a tactic I think Vice failed to do.
Tumblr media
Makeup and Hairstyling
“Border”
“Mary Queen of Scots”
“Vice”
I think the makeup and hairstyling nomination only applies to Christian Bale in Vice, although an incredible transformation it was. And although there are some stunning transformations in Mary Queen of Scots, I think Border deserves to take home the oscar. Eva Melander and Eero Milonoff are virtually unrecognisable in this film as the makeup and hairstyling helps to make this film so special.
Tumblr media
Costume Design
“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” Mary Zophres
“Black Panther,” Ruth E. Carter
“The Favourite,” Sandy Powell
“Mary Poppins Returns,” Sandy Powell
“Mary Queen of Scots,” Alexandra Byrne
Some great period costumes were shown in The Favourite, Mary Queen of Scots, Mary Poppins Returns and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. However the costume design in Black Panther was highly unique and revolutionary. The in depth detail and authenticity that went into the African warrior costumes as well as the Black Panther suit was extremely impressive. So much hard work went into making these costumes and it was refreshing to see African culture portrayed this way in a major Hollywood movie.
Tumblr media
Sound
Original Score
“BlacKkKlansman,” Terence Blanchard
“Black Panther,” Ludwig Goransson
“If Beale Street Could Talk,” Nicholas Britell
“Isle of Dogs,” Alexandre Desplat
“Mary Poppins Returns,” Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman
First of all I am absolutely astounded that First Man was not nominated for best score, did they even see the movie ??? Anyway, this category is still extremely difficult to pick. I ended up with a tie between Black Panther and Isle of Dogs. If you read my Mary Poppins Returns review then you’ll already know how obsessed I am with the music in this film. If Beale Street Could Talk also offers some extremely beautiful and emotional piano pieces. BlacKkKlansman was also one of my favourite film scores as the solo guitar melody along with smooth drums and lush strings creates an extremely unique score. Black Panther however had an extremely powerful score that was authentic to African culture. The African vocals and drums creates a powerful score for a powerful King. I also absolutely loved the Isle of Dogs soundtrack as I can never look past Alexandre Desplat. The plucked strings fits perfectly with Wes Anderson’s lively animation. But yeah, still mad about First Man.

Original Song
“All The Stars” from “Black Panther” by Kendrick Lamar, SZA
“I’ll Fight” from “RBG” by Diane Warren, Jennifer Hudson
“The Place Where Lost Things Go” from “Mary Poppins Returns” by Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman
“Shallow” from “A Star Is Born” by Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, Andrew Wyatt and Benjamin Rice
“When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings” from “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” by David Rawlings and Gillian Welch
An easy one for me. I do love the Kendrick beat for Black Panther as well as anything Mary Poppins. “When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings” was surprisingly a very close second. If you would have told me a year ago that a song sung by Tim Nelson would be one of my favourite film songs I would have laughed. The oscar however absolutely has to go to “Shallow”. This song is so raw and unique and has so much power and emotion. Bradley and Lady Gaga’s chemistry and their vocals make this song an oscar worthy performance that I can’t wait to hear live on the day.

Sound Editing
“Black Panther,” Benjamin A. Burtt, Steve Boeddeker
“Bohemian Rhapsody,” John Warhurst
“First Man,” Ai-Ling Lee, Mildred Iatrou Morgan
“A Quiet Place,” Ethan Van der Ryn, Erik Aadahl
“Roma,” Sergio Diaz, Skip Lievsay
Yes, finally First Man is recognised for sound. I am happy that A Quiet Place got nominated as it proves that silence is just as important as music in films. The oscar does by far go to First Man though as the sound in this film is astonishing. The way it is editing really highlights the important parts of the movie and turns it into a intimate drama rather than a Hollywood blockbuster.

Sound Mixing
“Black Panther”
“Bohemian Rhapsody”
“First Man”
“Roma”
“A Star Is Born”
Again, same as above although each one of these nominations is deserving of the award. Sound mixing is slightly different as it is about how you hear the sound rather than what you hear. Two different but equally important parts of sound design. The sound mixing works with the sound editing in First Man to create a superb sonic film.

Animated Feature
“Incredibles 2,” Brad Bird
“Isle of Dogs,” Wes Anderson
“Mirai,” Mamoru Hosoda
“Ralph Breaks the Internet,” Rich Moore, Phil Johnston
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman
Loved Incredibles 2, loved Isle of Dogs but my favourite animated feature by far was Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse. I have already written about how much I loved this film as it has completely revolutionized superhero and animated films. The story, the graphics, the sound really brought the comics to life to create a stunning, unique and important animated feature.

Acting
Best Supporting Actor
Mahershala Ali, “Green Book”
Adam Driver, “BlacKkKlansman”
Sam Elliott, “A Star Is Born”
Richard E. Grant, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
Sam Rockwell, “Vice”
I always love any role Sam Rockwell plays and I thought he made an incredible George Bush. Adam Driver was also impressive in BlacKkKlansman along with Sam Elliott’s legendary performance in A Star is Born. I can’t quite decide however between Mahershala Ali and Richard E. Grant. Ali is one of my favourite actors and he plays the reserved piano player role so well in Green Book, the reason why the film is getting so much attention. Grant also plays an impressive part in Can You Ever Forgive Me that for me actually overshadows McCarthy’s performance.

Best Supporting Actress
Amy Adams, “Vice”
Marina de Tavira, “Roma”
Regina King, “If Beale Street Could Talk”
Emma Stone, “The Favourite”
Rachel Weisz, “The Favourite”
Again, extremely hard to pick. I am a little confused that Amy Adams was nominated for this performance but not for her performance in Arrival??? Marina de Tavira also surprises audiences with her performance in Roma as she highlights the struggles of being a mother. Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz both play incredible roles in The Favourite, both characters that I don’t think I’ll be forgetting anytime soon. Regina King however absolutely shines in If Beale Street Could Talk especially considering she didn’t have that much screen time. She is a very talented actress and it would be incredible to see the award go to a woman of colour.

Best Lead Actor
Christian Bale, “Vice”
Bradley Cooper, “A Star Is Born”
Willem Dafoe, “At Eternity’s Gate”
Rami Malek, “Bohemian Rhapsody”
Viggo Mortensen, “Green Book”
Some incredible performances by actors this year including Viggo Mortensen who plays an Italian American surprisingly well. I was also very impressed by Willem Dafoe in At Eternity’s Gate who brings raw emotion to the character of Van Gogh. Christian Bale, one of my favourite actors did an extraordinary transformation to play the character of Dick Cheney and I won’t be surprised if he takes home the oscar. Rami Malek also had an incredible transformation to play Freddie Mercury and I think it’s safe to say that the oscar will likely go to him. My favourite performance however was by Bradley in A Star is Born. I’ve already talked about how much I love this film and Bradley absolutely shines in it. He plays the musician, the alcoholic and the lover extremely well as he brings so much emotion and this film definitely moved me the most because of his performance.

Best Lead Actress
Yalitza Aparicio, “Roma”
Glenn Close, “The Wife”
Olivia Colman, “The Favourite”
Lady Gaga, “A Star Is Born”
Melissa McCarthy, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
I’m sorry I’ve just given up now. There are so many incredible actresses out there and they all deserve the oscar. Yalitza was absolutely incredible in Roma, an outstanding performance that brings so much joy to Mexican people as she gets the praise she deserves. Olivia Colman played an unforgettable role in The Favourite and Melissa McCarthy really surprised me in Can You Ever Forgive Me. The tie for the favourites however (and I’m wondering if there will actually be a tie) is between Glenn Close and Lady Gaga. A Star is Born is one of my favourite films of 2018 and Lady Gaga’s performance was a big reason for this. I was blown away by her acting and never once doubted that Ally was new to the world of music and fame. Glenn Close also impressed me with her performance in The Wife, and as we’ve seen with multiple awards ceremonies already, she is clearly a favourite to win.

Best Director and Best Picture
Best Director
Spike Lee, “BlacKkKlansman”
Pawel Pawlikowski, “Cold War”
Yorgos Lanthimos, “The Favourite”
Alfonso Cuarón, “Roma”
Adam McKay, “Vice”
So many great contenders this year but where the hell are the women??? Although I assume the oscar will go to one of my all time favourite directors (so I’m not complaining) Alfonso Cuarón, I think Spike Lee deserves the award. I’m shocked that this is his first time nominated to be honest. He has such a unique vision and all of his films especially BlacKkKlansman manages to connect comedy with politics to create an outstanding film that makes you both laugh and think. He is an extraordinary director and he really deserves this award.

Best Picture
“Black Panther”
“BlacKkKlansman”
“Bohemian Rhapsody”
“The Favourite”
“Green Book”
“Roma”
“A Star Is Born”
“Vice”
Best picture for me has to BlacKkKlansman. I don’t really understand how Vice and Bohemian Rhapsody are even in this category and although I did like Green Book, it wasn’t exactly a favourite for me. The Favourite was an extremely unique film that merged genres and had powerful performances, stunning costumes and production design and an intriguing story. Roma, who has very high chances of taking home the award was a refreshingly stunning film that highlights a mexican family who often do not get to see themselves represented in Hollywood. The cinematography, production design and sound were particular highlights for me along with Yalitza’s performance. Black Panther, a highly revolutionary film that has literally shaped history, has an outstanding cast, spectacular production design and costumes and a powerful score is an incredible contender for best picture and I would absolutely love if it won the award. A Star is Born, one of my favourite films of the year had so much emotion that it moved and inspired me in a way that Hollywood films don’t really do anymore. The directing, performances, cinematography, editing and of course music makes this film an extremely worthy Best Picture nominee. In the end I chose BlacKkKlansman as my best picture. Spike Lee delivers a unique film based on a true story that manages to balance laughter with shock, fact with fiction to represent both the absurdity and danger of racism in America. It combines extraordinary acting, editing, sound, cinematography and directing to create an extremely moving film that successfully comments of the political climate of America in 2018 and inspires a change. This is something that few Hollywood movies actually succeed in doing, and it should therefore win best picture.
